Dierenrijk Europe Dierenrijk news

Dierenrijk is now called Eindhoven Zoo.

Dierenrijk wordt Eindhoven Zoo | Eindhoven Zoo

From Dierenrijk Europe to Dierenrijk Animal Kingdom to Eindhoven Zoo. I am a fan of a name being crisp, clean and simple, and so I love the idea of Eindhoven Zoo and I like the new, elephant-themed logo.

I'm not a huge fan of the new name - while the zoo is not that far from Eindhoven, it is not in Eindhoven itself and also, according to socially media messages, not easily reachable from Eindhoven by public transport.

I do like the new logo personally, although I also find it a bit too suggestive of an African rather than an Asian elephant.

I would welcome a more direct public transport option to / from the Zoo to Helmond - Eindhoven. It is more a question of is the Municipality really ready to invest .... in public transport?

The 8-year-old Indian rhino male Gainda moved from Eindhoven Zoo to Tiergarten Nuremberg this week. The 36-year-old female Narayani will also move from Eindhoven Zoo to another zoo later this year. Soon, Eindhoven zoo will then get a young pair of Indian rhinos, with the hope of welcoming a calf in a few years.

It seems Dierenrijk - Eindhoven Zoo has finally negotiated the hurdle and it will be nice to see a young and potential breeding pair coming to the Zoo.

16-year-old polar bear male Wilbäl has died. He underwent emergency surgery last weekend due to worsening of an existing umbilical hernia. Although the operation seemed successful, he did not recover as hoped. He showed signs of severe abdominal pain and refused to eat or drink.

The vet and keepers worked for days to help him recover, but unfortunately to no avail. It was then decided to put him to sleep to avoid further suffering.

In November 5-year old female Greater One-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) Duna arrived from Terra Natura Park.

The Northern lynx (Lynx lynx lynx) that was born in August, is a male.

A week ago Asian Elephants Jing (6) and Ma Palai (26) have been vaccinated with the new EEHV vaccine that has recently been released by the University of Utrecht. Multiple elephants within the Netherlands have now been vaccinated with this novel vaccine, hopefully it works.

Recently a female Northern White-cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys) arrived to accompany the already present male.

Eindhoven Zoo's pair of red pandas has died. The animals had been behind the scenes for some time due to work on the electricity pylon in their enclosure. There, the pandas died due to old age and a medical reason. The zoo is in talks with the EEP to bring new pandas to Eindhoven Zoo.

I am expecting an arrival here pretty soon of the new male with a designation to breed with female Duna. Cow Narayani was recently sent out to Blijdorp - Rotterdam Zoo to live out the remainder of her post-reproductive life at Blijdorp (and after their young female was transported across Continents to South America leaving the current exhibit vacant).

Golden takin perhaps?
I would expect so... The enclosure is typically hoofstock modelled and Dierenrijk thankfully has a history of bringing in new and interesting species (and with a focus on endangered species), So, Yep ... I think so too. Golden takin.

Golden Takins have been confirmed. Red panda will also get an enclosure in near the takin. At the link there also is a sketch/image of the new enclosures.

Unieke diersoort voor Eindhoven Zoo: zeldzame takins vanaf deze zomer te zien - ZooFlits

Eindhoven Zoo is set to welcome a unique new animal species. The Brabant zoo is investing in the addition of golden takins this year, a rare hoofed animal not found in any other Dutch zoo.

“Two young males will take up residence in a newly designed, specially built enclosure,” a spokesperson for Eindhoven Zoo announced. The takins will have a spacious 2,100 square meter habitat, located where the camels were previously housed. This area will be completely renovated, including the addition of four hundred tons of stones to create a rocky environment that mimics their natural habitat.

The takin is native to the mountainous forests of Asia. These animals have a thick coat and robust build, making them well-adapted to harsh conditions and extreme cold. There are four subspecies, three of which are found in European zoos. The golden takin stands out due to its striking golden-yellow fur. In the wild, this species is classified as 'vulnerable.'

Stephan Rijnen, head of animal care at Eindhoven Zoo, is enthusiastic about the addition of these hoofed animals. “It is an honor and a challenge to welcome these special animals to our zoo,” he says. “Especially since they cannot be seen anywhere else in the Netherlands.” In Europe, only 21 zoos house this takin species. In Belgium, golden takins can only be seen at Pairi Daiza.

Red panda returns to Eindhoven Zoo In addition to the takin enclosure, the Brabant zoo is also building a new home for red pandas. This species will return to the zoo after the last pandas passed away last year. Two separate enclosures will be constructed next to the new takin habitat. “Although these animals come from the same geographical region, each will have its own living space within the park,” the zoo stated.

The area is designed by Rick Merkx, the regular designer for Libéma, the parent company of Eindhoven Zoo. He was previously responsible for the expansion of the elephant enclosure at Safaripark Beekse Bergen and the design of a North American area at AquaZoo Leeuwarden. Construction of the enclosure will begin after Easter and is expected to be completed by mid-June. “If everything goes according to plan, visitors will be able to admire the golden takins this summer.”

Unique animal species This year, Dutch zoos seem to be following a trend of investing in lesser-known but rare animal species that are not yet present in the Netherlands. For example, ZooParc Overloon will welcome divers, drills, and African crested porcupines this summer—three unique species for the Netherlands. In Limburg, GaiaZoo Kerkrade is investing in an enclosure for the endangered yellow-footed rock-wallabies, which are also not found elsewhere in the Netherlands. With the golden takins, Eindhoven Zoo now also has a unique addition for this year.

Timber, a 27-year-old Asian elephant bull, arrived from Wildlands two days ago. He will stay separately from the herd for the first two weeks, after which he will be introduced to the rest of the herd step by step. If all goes well, Timber could provide offspring with the young cow Jing in the future.

Construction of a new park restaurant will also start soon. This restaurant will be halfway along the walking route and will overlook the Indian rhinos and the new Amur tiger enclosure. The restaurant will replace ‘De Halte’. The restaurant will have 75 seats inside and about 250 outside, some of which will be under a canopy. Construction will start this April. The playground near the restaurant will also be expanded. New play equipment will be added to the water playground, which opened last year, including one for children with disabilities. The opening of the restaurant and playground will be later this year.
