Chester Zoo Diffiycult Species Too See At Chester

I've never not seen the bears, or a bear should I say. I have seen a sand lizard (I think I got a photo, and as far as I recall it seemed to be missing a leg) but the toad glass was too dirty to see either way.

They have just put miniature monkeys on zoolex and i can see why the monkeys are hard to see.

The miniature monkeys exhibit looks fantastic, with a large outdoor enclosure complementing the smaller indoor space. Many zoos have tamarins and marmosets strictly in glass-fronted indoor exhibits, and so it is wonderful to see enormous trees for such tiny monkeys.

Yes, I like to watch the marmosets running around the big oaks.
Last summer (the last time I was at the zoo) we had fun trying to find all the babies dotted about the outside enclosure.

The animals i didnt see on my visit today
Spectacled Bears
Indian Rhino
Pudu
Bush Dog
Anaconda
Jamaican Boas
Blackbuck
Brow Antlered Deer
Black Lion Tamarin
Red Bellied Squirrel
Prevost Squirrel

Patna was well hidden today. He was lying down behind some of the wooden posts!!

I saw the Pudu, and I think I saw the Black lion tamarin, the brow antled deer and the blackbuck.

Good idea of listing them ZooMania, I'll list mine from my visit on thursday...

Babirusa - techincally off-show, but i usually see them
Kangaroo
Sumatran Tiger
Prevost's Squirrel
Spiny Turtle
Black Lion Tamarin
Bornean Orang Utan
Pied Tamarin
Blackbuck
Brow-Antlered Deer
Phillipine Spotted Deer
Bactrian Camels
Grevy's Zebra
Sand Lizard
Mallorcan Midwife Toad
Tuatara
Asian-Short Clawed Otter

Wow I missed a lot on reflection  probably due to the large crowds...

I Didnt see the tuatara either or the sumatran tiger, i saw the two female bengal tigers though. The kangaroos were out today though, im not sure but i think i saw both types of orangutans

Tuatara hibernate for 6 months each year, also the enclosure looked like it was being replanted.

I've never seen the Mallorcan midwives.

Back in the old days the beavers were famous for never being visible. They lived in the present round coati enclosure which was a series of islands. I must have been to the zoo about 40 times before I ever saw one.

Bat-eared foxes lived in the old small mammal house for a couple of years and even bred (DNS) but I never saw them.

What is the point of two coati exhibits, surely just stick to exhibiting them in with the bears and turn their enclosure into an exhibit fitting into the African rainforest area, say an enclosure for a guenon species?

Philippine spotted dear are nearly always visible in that small paddock near the ostriches.

I don't think that the spiny turtles are still on show. I was told about 18 months ago that they were taken off show because they had laid and egg....

I never see the babirusa where they are, because I never go down that area.

The Pied tamarins are usually very easy to see.

I haven't had a good view of the black lion tamarin since the female died.

I Didnt know the babirusa were still on show. I Dont think i've ever seen the spiny turtles whilst i've only seen the lion tamarins once or twice

You can see them from the long path which goes behind the giraffe house heading to the jaguars. They can be seen in the paddock which used to hold Okapi and Bongo.

The coatis in the exhibit which used to house beavers are to be phased out. A new species will be kept there. In 2006 I was told it would be a monkey species, but that no final decision had been made.

I have noticed a drastic decline in the numbers on the island. Late 2005 it was a strong active population, but now it seems as if there are just a couple of juveniles living on there...

It'd be interesting to see something new on there as well, but wouldn't monkeys require some form of housing as well?

I have never seen the midwife toads in the old tuatara house, just tadpoles. I did see them in the now closed area of the Tropical Realm, but they were only slightly more visible than the almost impossible to see crested toads.

I had forgotten about the Bat-eared Foxes. I only saw them once and got a quick photo of one. It shows a bat-eared fox and quite a lot of wire mesh. They only stayed for about 2 years.

The colony is being managed to a decline, indeed I think they're all old specimens now anyway. A shelter would be needed for monkeys; but knowing Chester, they're probably discussing something completely different by now.
