Kyabram Fauna Park Dingo Cubs

I went to Kyabram on Sunday with my kids and found they had Dingo Pups.
I took a few photos I have put in the gallery. The pups were very active and the father defensive. He came up near the wire once and made a grunting type sound at us with his hair on his back standing up. He kept watch the whole time while the mother just hid in the back corner. Not sure if she was scared of us or the pups. The pups are at the age when they would constantly anoy their mother so I think she was trying to get away from them.

The spoted Tail Quoll was also out and looking fat so I got some photos of him.

Most of the snake tanks are occupied so they must have replaced most the stolen snakes. I did hear a lot of snake keepers were going to donate snakes.

I just noticed that you can see the side of the mothers head in that photo looking out from behind a rock at me.

Dingo Pups are very cute and playful. I think dongo's are underated in our zoos. They have a great educational value, especially since there are so few Pure Dingo left. They are now one of my favourites and think they deserve a bit more attention. Although I could be a little biasedas I write this with my new pup sitting on my lap.

One thing i have always been told about dingo's is that they are not really great pets unless you have the time to be with them. I have seince discovered they are incredibly affectionate and develop really strong bonds with their owners. My vet kept telling me that this puppy was one of the most affectionate she has come accross. I think a few more zoos should interact with their dingos.

very soon the pups will be walked around the park to educate the public.

Monty....were you by any chance annoyed by a particular emu. he seems to have taken a liking to the visitors. on my last visit a group of tourists refused to go outside of the gift shop when the emu started to hassle them.

the mother of the pups used to be very friendly but now is extremly shy and spends most of her time in the corner of the enclosure.

I did see emus twice and I presume they were different emus as they were a fair way apart. I did not go over to them and they did not come to me. Last time I was there the keeper told me the one which was following us was called Meany, not because he is mean but because there was two Eany and Meany.

I got a family ticket this time so I will be going back more regually.

the family membership seems to be really great value when you get 2 adults and up to 4 kids into the park for the whole year. the park just aquired a koala aswell (a bushfire suvivor) his name is helmut.

We've had dingoes in Ft. Wayne since 1987. Our original pair came to us from Healesville in 1987. They produced 4 cubs here. The male, Koori, lived to be over 15 years old. One of the cubs remained here and was on loan to a coupld of other US zoos--Columbus and Kansas City.
Our next pair of animals came to us from Warsaw Poland. Jontke and Jaga came to us as hand-reared pups. We made the decision to obedience train both of them. They enjoyed walks through the park but Jontek small children as prey so we discontinued the walks! We were able, however, to leash them and walk them out of the area when heavy rains flooded their barn or ice cut of the power and heat. Jontek died almost 2 years years ago at the age of 12. Jaga is over 13 and still doing OK. We are attempting to import 2 pups next year to give Jaga a chance to retire. I love working with these animals! I will attest to the fact that they don't take well to strangers and training any new keeper to work with them is very long process.

if any zoo chatters are interested the ky fauna park is holding a endangered species day. they will have the dingo pups out and reptiles roaming around the park. plus they are taking groups into the off display bandicoot breeding facility.

Jesse when is that. I would like to go and have a family ticket now.

Hope it is not this weekend.

If I had the money, I'd so be over there :D Dingoes are one of my favorite animals. I wish more North American zoos would take interest in them, especially with their numbers down to interbreeding with domestic dogs.

And one of the few "native" animals that can be kept as pets in most Australian States

It shouldn'y be too hard at all to get Pups over there? The export permits here are based on scientific names so it should be as easy as importing a domestic dog from Australia.

I think Dingoes are very picky unless socialised well as pups. I was incredibly shocked with mine, by the time a got home from picking her up she wouldn't stop following me. Most affectionate dog I have come accross.

I was taliking to someone about not being able to have marsupials for pets in NSW, like in other states. They commented that one thing good about NSW is that we can keep Dingos much easier than other states.
