Doctor Who Discussion

As I recall, in Revelations and Remembrance, they didn't so much fly, but hovered a few feet above the ground in order to get up stairs and other obstacles.

And the farting just seemed to me to be a very cheap and unsophisticated attempt at humour. But I can understand some people might like it.

First Introduced to Who:
Me (flicking through channels): Oh Doctor who, what the hell is that about?
Simple yet effective:D
Top 3 Doctors: David Tennant. Only fully seen him and Chris, who is my second. Then I don't really have a third but I'll choose Tom Baker....:D
Top 3 Companions: Donna, Rose, Captain Jack
Top 3 Monsters: Vasta Nerada/The Flood, Weeping angels, Midnight monster
Top 3 Stories:

1. The End of Time 1/2: Perfect goodbye to Ten....I cried at moments, laughed at others, was on the edge of my seat all the way through. My favorite moment would be the cafe scene and The Doctors goodbyes/regeneration
"I don't want to go":(:(
Worst part of it. The vivocci...hated them...their makeup kept changing!!! And killing the timelords 5 minutes after they came back:mad:

2. Silence in the Libary/Forest of the Dead: Loved it, showed how scary, wibbly-wobbly, funny and complicated Doctor who is. Supurb acting and the chemistry between Doctor and River shows how awesome the future will be.
Best parts: Rivers descriptions of The Doctor near the end. "Everybody lives!" sprint to save River Song. The Vasta Nerada.

3. Human Nature/Family of Blood: Showed how fantastic an actor David Tennant is and how brilliant Doctor who is. This two parter only had the real Doctor in it for a total of 5 mins. The rest was mostly Marthas story, keeping the human John Smith safe and her struggle to get the Doctor back.
Best parts: "He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever, he burns at the centre of time and see the whole of the universe....and he's wonderful.":D
The Doctors little nose trick (my biggest grin ever that point) and his punishment of the family. And not forgetting "You choose to change. He choose to die."

Heres hoping Matt will be awesome in his own way.

I'm sure he'll be brilliant, I hate seeing all these people say they'll hate it just based on what he looks like! Oh, and just randomly, I've got a feeling that episode 3 of series 5, Victory of the Daleks, will be set at the Natural History Museum as it is written by Mark Gatiss and set in World War II (with Ian McNeice as Churchill), just like a cancelled series 4 script written by Mark Gatiss set in the NHM during WW2...

Ha, I loved the vinvocci myself, though maybe it was just because Adams was played by the same person as Nina in Being Human. :D

Yea I noticed it was her but....meh I personally didn't like them.

And I don't know about the NHM but I'm definatly looking forward to the Dalek/Churchill scenario :P

Ahh right. So do you only read spoilers when they are confirmed? Because that site is very good, usually. It doesn't normally post random rumours. I can never help reading the spoilers.

Ya, cos the producers then know whether it deserves suprising you or not (such as how the Master was always referred to as Mr Saxon before Utopia was broadcast, Timothy Dalton as 'the Narrator). The only time this failed was when they spoiled the Daleks in Manhatten cliffhanger by revealing the Dalek Sec Hybrid on the cover of Radio Times a week before it aired.

Oh right I see, then I will delete the post, just in case others are tempted.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

I'm hoping nobody gets any scoops on the final. I would love to be completely in the dark on what's coming, but if there's a rumour to hear, I'll hear it.

SO!

What did everyone think of the first episode of the new series?

My thoughts?

Matt Smith - Brilliant, loving him so far
Karen Gillan - Excellent, and she's pretty fit aswell!
Steven Moffat - I never doubted him once, fantastic headwriter and producer
New TARDIS - Beautiful, stunning and pretty badass, looks proper shiny and still as weird as ever, only more glamorous. Love the levels to it, hope we get to see more rooms for a change
New Sonic - looks great, can't wait to see what other stuff it can do, and get the toy (:o)
New theme tune - Weird, harking back to the days of old. Don't like it, don't hate it, but I'm sure it'll grow on me over time
New title sequence - Love it, more dark and deeper than the previous ones.

My favourite bits?

FISH CUSTARD!!!:D

And that awesome scene on the hospital roof
(The previous 10 doctors shown, then Matt steps through the image of Tennant)

Hello, I'm the Doctor......and basically......run!:D:p

Those of us in Australia only saw The End of Time a few weeks back, and it may be a while before we see the new doctor, so could those of you residing in Pommyland please try not to reveal all the storylines/plots/twists etc. But it will be interesting to hear what everyone thought.

Thanks!

Totally agree, I didn't like him in the EoT but thought he played the part brilliantly in this episode and look forward to seeing what he can do in the future.

Karen Gillan - Excellent, and she's pretty fit aswell!

Didn't like her and didn't think she was a particularly good actor either. For one thing, why did her accent keep changing (it went american at one point) and why was she always clenching her fists and huffing. Having said that, she is still pretty fit ;)

Steven Moffat - I never doubted him once, fantastic headwriter and producer

Although certain parts of the script were good, I thought that this was probably his weakest episode to date. That's not to say it was bad, just not particularly special - I hope this is not a sign of things to come.

New TARDIS - Beautiful, stunning and pretty badass, looks proper shiny and still as weird as ever, only more glamorous. Love the levels to it, hope we get to see more rooms for a change

I don't like it anywhere near as much as the old one, in my opinion it looks a little too shiny and glamourous. Still, love the greater size and the levels, plus there's now the possibility of visiting other parts of it which is exciting.

New theme tune - Weird, harking back to the days of old. Don't like it, don't hate it, but I'm sure it'll grow on me over time.

I agree, it doesn't have the same energy and spirit of the old one.

New title sequence - Love it, more dark and deeper than the previous ones.

I don't think it was a good idea to have a CGI title sequence as the mill generally do it quite badly, as such I think it looks quite cheap and fake. Still, it's quite cool when the tardis flies out of the title.

And favourite bits?

  • "Get a girlfriend Jeff"
  • "I'm a kissogram!"
  • The bit done with photographs where the Doctor is looking around the village green.
  • And Matt Smith stepping through the image of David Tennant on the roof was also great, sort of when he became the Doctor.

Overall, I liked the episode and it was good to watch, but I hope we see a few really good ones as the series goes on.

Hix ..... you must have iron will power ! I'm afraid I can't resist reading all the Doctor Who gossip and when I'm at a loose end and want to surf I'll inevitably turn to Digitalspy and the Doctor Who and Torchwood forum where there's always a load of rumours to read and can never resist clicking on the (hidden) spoilers there.

FWIW ........ my mother in law, (so take this with a pinch of salt) has a friend who was told by 'the writer' (interpret this as you will) who apparently lives nearby (so somewhere in Norfolk) that Matt Smith is only going to stay for one series. She insists this is 'true', though why anyone seriously connected with the show would be revealing this to an OAP I don't know !

I'm exacly the same - too impatient to wait for the episodes :D

I'm just like you, however I have gained some control over this recently cause I don't go to places like Gallifrey base or whatever that often.:p

And not it's not true, It has already been confirmed by the BBC that Matt Smith AND Karen Gillan are both in the 2010 christmas special and series 6!:D

It's been reported that Matt is on a three year contract with the option to extend to five years, should he wish.

Ha ha ..... I did tell my mother in law her friend must have got hold of the wrong end of the stick !!

No, fraid not.

I'm really a devotee of the old series, particularly the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker years. While I enjoy the current incarnation of the show I'm not as fixated as I would have been 20 years ago.

Plus, I spend way too much time on ZooChat, don't have time to go looking at other things on the net!

Despite my comments a week ago, the new season airs in a couple of hours. Howvere, the network that broaqdcasts it made it available online the other morning (at 00:00). I've just watched it and can now offer my opinions:

Matt Smith - Not really too keen on him. Appears to be an OK actor, but just doesn't have the look of someone who can defend the planet.

Karen Gillan - I can't really comment on her acting, too busy looking at her legs. Fit? Maybe, the word I would use is 'hot'. Glad that it's her and not the twelve year old that's signed up for three years.

Steven Moffat - Nice story, nothing particularly brilliant though.

New TARDIS - Better than the last, but still ugly inside. Much prefered the simplicity of the original series Tardis.

New Sonic - Barely saw it. DSeems to have a different coloured light on it.

New theme tune - Not too sure about this one. I don't particularly dislike it, but it doesn't quite grab me either.

One thing I didn't like (and never will, I don't think) is this Tardis' ability to fly, the way it did in the opening sequence over London and then crashing into a shed. The Tardis could never fly, at least not until the series was re-invented a few years ago. In the original series' you only saw the Tardis flying in the Time corridor, and it would just materialise at its destination, either on the ground or in midair.

But that's just me. I look forward to next week's story.

There was a line in 'The Runaway Bride' saying that for a space ship it didn't do much flying. I think it's probably done more now because it's more achievable and looks more realistic.
