"The grey partridge may soon disappear from the landscape as abruptly as the thousands of farm workers that once populated our countryside, and yet there are pockets of England where the partridge manages to thrive. Places such as East Anglia where farmers and landowners have a strong sporting interest. Some now take care to ensure that conditions are the best possible for the partridge without the economy of the farm suffering too much. In fact, the farmers are likely to gain. Partridges themselves are also a valuable crop though this may seem like a strange way to look at a bird that is much a part of England as the oak or the hawthorne hedge.
