Hi all. I will be visiting the zoo next week for the first time. What are the unmissable areas, and what are the species I should look out for which are unique?

The brown hyenas are certainly a must-see!

HERE ARE SOME SPECIES TO LOOK FOR AT CHAPULTEPEC ZOO- MEXICAN DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP, BROWN HYENA. VOLCANO RABBIT, MEXICAN MARGAY, MEXICAN OCELOT, MEXICAN BROCKET DEER, MEXICAN BLACK HOWLER MONKEY, JAPANESE RACCOON DOG, WHITE LIPPED PECCARY, AND CALIFORNIA CONDOR ARE AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS. THE NEW REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN CENTER MAY ALREADY BE OPEN, WITH INTERESTING MEXICAN SPECIES THERE.

Thank you both. Tomorrow is the big day; looking forward to the Pandas, the brown hyena (which I had no idea they had, they’ve avoided me at other collections!) and plenty of Mexican rarities.

Could anybody please answer these questions:

- what happened to the last great apes at the zoo? When I visited I noticed there was none there but lots of signage and enclosures clearly set up for them.

- the Spanish Wikipedia page mentions an incident which caused the elephants to leave? Where were they kept?

- where were the polar bears kept and are there any plans to replace them?

- no sign of any leopards when I visited - are they still there?

Reply to the questions above,
I have not seen prairie dogs lately at Chapultepec.
Chapultepec no longer holds any great apes. Last year an older male orangutan named Jambi died. Great apes are very difficult to obtain for Mexican zoos because of a stupid federal law that prohibits the import of all primate species except for scientific purposes. For the moment there seems to be no intention of bringing back apes to Chapultepec. Guadalajara zoo has a breeding group of Bornean orangutans and Africam Safari Puebla has a breeding group of chimpanzees, which may be a source in the future.
The elephants went to San Juan de Aragon zoo. The old elephants house is in the center of the zoo, next to the giraffe savana, and will soon become the axolotl and amphibians center.
The polar bears were kept next where the sea lions are. There are no plans to bring back polar bears now that the species is so scarce in zoos in the. Americas. The last remaining polar bear in Mexico is Ágata at Guadalajara zoo.
On my recent visits I have seen both the African leopards and our male snow leopard. The leopards came from Havana zoo just like the brown hyenas.

I'm planning on visiting Mexico this year, with several days in Mexico City. Chapultepec Zoo is a must, and looking through the galleries, Los Coyotes seems like it is worthwhile too.

Is San Juan de Aragon also worth visiting for species rare in European zoos?

Thanks!
