Drayton Manor Theme Park Drayton Manor Theme Park Zoo

Flash Sale!
bongorob and I had been considering a zoo trip this week and I happened to check the DM website. Flash Sale! Half price for advance bookings this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for Half Term. As DM is expensive because it's a theme park as well as a zoo, this seemed too good to miss: we got in for £15 each because we're both old and grey.
As we hoped, although the rides and food outlets were pretty busy, the zoo was OK on Friday. It was quite popular but not crowded, distance muffled the screams from the roller-coaster and almost all the family parties were well behaved. It may be busier on Saturday and Sunday, but I think we got pretty good value for our visit. I have no idea if this offer will be repeated later this year, but anyone who wants to visit might like to check the website.
Re-reading my report from last year has confirmed my impression that the zoo has made progress. Everything looked tidy and in good order for the summer season. The monkey cages have been refurbished for the black spider monkeys and the three female rhesus; but we saw no pig-tailed macaques. The enclosure at the entrance had 2 Kirk's dik-diks and large signs showing plans for a new lemur exhibit. The parrots were again the highlight of the bird collection, but we also saw a newly-arrived black hornbill and there may have been another in the shelter and there is a pair on-show already. We also had a nice surprise when we spotted a Bruce's green pigeon.
The Reptile House was the other highlight. One of the larger cages had signs saying 'Arriving soon Gabon vipers'. But there were two young Gabon vipers inside and we nearly bumped into a keeper with a snake hook and a satisfied expression :). We could not see the red-bellied zonures, but we saw almost everything else including regal horned lizards (Phrynosoma solare) and Madagascar hog-nosed snake (Leioheterodon madagascariensis) which I think are new arrivals since last year.
The only downside was the Friday afternoon traffic around Birmingham on the M6 :(

This article just popped up on chrome: Drayton Manor are offering 'selfie' experiences with their Red Pandas. The article makes some interesting points about good vs bad zoos, and whether the general social media using public can tell the difference, but quickly degenerates into an anti-zoo rant.

Posing for selfies with zoo animals is harmful, selfish and has to stop

Update in Twitter to say the park has been sold to Looping Group. Looks like they were in financial problems after the pandemic. As far as I can make out it's the same company who own WMSP.

Here's some info about the group

Who are we? | Groupe Looping

HISTORY

Looping was created in 2011 with the takeover of seven parks belonging to the Compagnie des Alpes - the Grand Aquarium in Saint-Malo, Bagatelle, the Grand Aquarium of the Val de Loire, Mini-Châteaux, Pleasurewood Hills, Avonturenpark Hellendoorn and Aquaparc. The Group continued its external expansion by acquiring Cobac Parc in 2012, Isla Magica in 2013, followed by Planète Sauvage, Mer de Sable in 2015 , Fort Fun, Zoo de la Flèche and Amarante Water Park in 2017 and West Midland Safari Park in 2018.

Since 2019, Mubadala Capital is the new reference shareholder of the group. With their support, the Looping group aims to accelerate its growth both on the existing perimeter and through future acquisitions.

You can go into WMSP and see the animals and if you want to go on the rides you buy an extra wrist band. I hope they introduce a similar system for DMP.
Once upon a time that used to be the system, I think entry to the park was about 2.50 and then tickets or a wristband used to be an additional charge.

This sale feels like a good thing - it's reassuring to me that the group own WMSP and other big zoos like Planète Sauvage. We'll see what the future brings I guess!
From what I know of the company I am not sure it's a good thing for the zoo. They are only focus on commercial things and they don't really care about animals and conservation. Of course, general oublic will not see the difference and this is a problem.

Furthermore I am afraid the company has understand the economical importance of british zoos and wants to own more in the future.

The zoo has been making good progress over the last couple of years and they had begun work on an african aviary until work was halted due to vivid. I hope these improvements continue but we will have to wait and see.

Obviously I meant 'covid' not vivid. Oops
Just been to Drayton today and the zoo is nice in my opinion. As you walk in the zoo entrance there is an enclousre that holds dusky padamelon but I only saw 1. Then there is the reptile house and meerkat enclosure. The tamarin trail is very nice as it hold multiple species of monkeys. Around the corner is an exhibit for red pandas and it is decent with a lot of climbing structures. Now comming to the only negative part of the zoo is the lynx enclosure. It's very small and poor with hardly any climbing areas. The fishing cat enclosure is very nice but I didnt manage to spot them. The lowland anoa enclosure seemed to be empty and they now hold no ostriches and they say something exciting is comming soon. There is lots of other paddocks and we managed to see, red kangaroos emu, Rhea, tapir, capybara and flamingo. Skipping past a few avaries you come to the gibbon exhibit and the columbian spider monkey exhibit. Both species were out in there enclosure but no lemurs were to be seen. The suluwasi maqauque enclosure had no animals outside and I couldn't see any inside. The tiger exhibit is very nice but only saw 1 tiger. Does anyone know where the new black leopard enclousre will be

There is only 1 Tiger left - the male died earlier this year.

A male Saki Monkey recently went to Koln. The young male Brazilian Tapir also departed over the Summer. He's joined a female at ZooParc Beauval

Do you know where the new black leopard enclosure will be located

I was there today too - we probably saw each other (I was the guy with a faded cap, a black face mask and camera pack on my back with my camera and monopod in my hand). There were some very nice reptiles (one was a complete surprise as I had never even heard of the species before - but you'll have to wait a few days while I sort out my photos before I reveal all). I particularly wanted to see and photograph the vinaceous amazons - which I managed to do. I saw the anoa, but not the fishing cat. Nice recent breedings include snowy owl, tarictic hornbill and Colombian black spider monkey.

Oh I saw you when you exited the reptile house I just went in.

I'm sorry about my delay in posting this. I could not download my Drayton Manor photos until I returned to my flat - and I had 5 zoo visits to make before I could even see them properly. The mystery reptile is . . .
I had never come across this species before, and I don't recall reading about it either. The scientific name is Langaha madagascariensis. It is a small arboreal species which hunts lizards and it is mildly venomous. On my first two visits to the Reptile House, this little lady had her nose behind the foliage and pointing in the wrong direction too. However I persisted and on my third visit she had changed position completely, giving me the chance I craved.
