Sad news from Drayton Manor
" It’s with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our 12-year-old Sumatran Tiger, Dora
1f9e1.png

Dora underwent a successful dental procedure, but tragically her heart stopped during recovery. Despite our efforts, we couldn't save her.
Dora wasn't just a tiger; she was family. Born in Prague in 2011, she stole our hearts when she arrived at Drayton Manor Zoo in 2015. Her loss has left a void in our Resort, and we're devastated.
As we honour her memory in the coming weeks, please share any pictures you have of Dora from your visits to Drayton Manor Zoo."

Sad news to hear but considering how easily stressed she was at least she is out of her misery being behind bars in one of the smallest Tiger enclosures in the country.

At this rate I think they should consider refitting the Tiger enclosure for a smaller species like Clouded leopards (or they could even move the Lynx in there).

That’s a sad way to lose such a nice looking cat - I was pleased to be able to see her on my recent visit as I’d heard she was quite angry with cameras / visitors and I didn’t want to bother her, but she had been fed so managed to see her eating. Not the largest enclosure and would suit a smaller cat better. But a shame all the same.

Still empty due to a change of zoo manager, but I very much doubt it will ever hold a tiger again more likely to house the lynx they have elsewhere.
I'm not expecting them to hold anymore tigers in there again considering the ridiculously small size of that enclosure. I thought it could be renovated to hold a smaller carnivore species, so long as the public don't mind.

We were at Yorkshire Wildlife yesterday, and during the Maned Wolf feed were informed that a female has gone to Drayton Manor, and another female to follow soon.

Having been to Drayton Manor, we thought about where they could be, and our first thought was the Tiger enclosure?
Honestly, I did think of Bush dog being added to the Tiger exhibit but Maned wolves should do just fine! :D

Had a good visit to Drayton Manor zoo today, it was very cold but the sun was out all day with clear skies. The zoo was quiet with just a few people there (there were 10 cars in the car park when I left and only 1 when I arrived) which made for some quiet spaces. It's a friendly place to visit with the keepers happy to stop for a chat with some fascinating experiences to share.

It still feels a bit like a horror movie set to drive around the edge of a deserted theme park, but it helped that this time I knew where I was going. And there were some nice Little Egrets in the main lake next to the road which was fun to see.

Lots of active animals out and about enjoying the Winter sunshine, including all the primates. The spider monkeys in particular were playing all over their enclosure and the Macaques were out having some food. The Maned wolves were showy and the enclosure which seemed tight for tigers seems a good space for them. The dik dik were playing chase around the crowned cranes which was fun to watch.

The Jewels of Oz aviary was shut, which I was expecting. The parrot area now has on show
  • Moluccan cockatoo
  • Horned parakeet
  • Sun conure
  • Umbrella cockatoo
  • Grey breasted parakeet
  • Vinaceous amazon
  • Palm cockatoo
The Tamarin Trail remains an interesting and engaging space. I thought the Golden Lion Tamarins might not be there as their sign holder was empty, but the sign was just upside down on the floor, guess it had blown off it's stand. As I was popping it back they came out to investigate what was going on. Nice to also see both groups of Cotton tops and youngsters and the playful group of Marmosets outside.

A few changes since my last visit in 2024
  • The zoo map that was on the wall opposite the entrance has been removed, I guess it was increasingly out of date with some of the changes across the zoo
  • The Dusky Pademelon sign has been removed from the enclosure with the Palma Wallaby
  • The Anoa has left the collection (which was noted in a comment on an image posted in September last year) and Rhea are now located in the enclosure
  • The aviary for the Black Hornbills near the red Pandas was empty and unsigned
  • The aviaries for the Golden and Edward's pheasants have been removed
  • The pond enclosure for the Nene and Laysan teal has been remodeled and is now an enclosure for Cape Porcupine as they move from the space they shared with the Meerkats

full

  • The Snowy Owl aviary near the Great grey owls and Spectacled owls was empty and unsigned
  • Red Crested Turaco have joined the Bruce's Green Pigeon and Weavers in the free flight aviary, the Amethyst Starlings have moved
  • There are now two Fishing Cats sharing the enclosure (male and female). Both were showy and interacting with each other. It's always a treat to see these rare cats and I hadn't paid attention to the fact they had added another since my last visit so two was a nice surprise
  • The Meerkat enclosure was locked and signed as closed until further notice following the death of the last remaining Meerkats
Lots to see in the Reptile House with the following signed
  • African pancake tortoise
  • Beaded lizard
  • Common desert iguana
  • Emerald swift
  • Fijian iguana
  • Flame bellied zonure
  • Giant waxy monkey frog
  • Gila monster
  • Golden poison frog
  • Green Anaconda
  • Green and Blue dart frog
  • Henkel's leaf tailed gecko
  • Koch's giant day gecko
  • Leaf nosed snake
  • Lined day gecko
  • Madagascan plated lizard
  • Madagascan tree boa
  • Madagascar cat eyed snake
  • Madagascar swift
  • Malagasy giant hognose
  • Maranon poison frog
  • Panther chameleon
  • Parson's chameleon
  • Radiated Tortoise
  • Regal horned lizard
  • Royal python
  • Short nosed vine snake
  • Standing's day gecko
  • Syrian tortoise
  • Three eyed Madagascan iguana
  • Western forest egg eating snake
  • Western girdled lizard
  • Western hognose
  • Yellow headed gecko

Shame about the Meerkats... I really hope they can acquire some more (or even add Dwarf mongoose) as it would be sad to see this enclosure go to waste.

I thought all the Rhea there had transferred to Banham Zoo. Is there any remaining animals over at the former Anoa/Pademelon exhibits?

Emu in the enclosure where the Anoa were and Palma wallaby in the enclosure opposite the meerkat house that had the Dusky Pademelon signage. My bad on the Rhea I assumed I hadn't seen them out vs they were not there.

Are anoa and dusky pademelon no longer here?

I'm afraid so. The Anoa I'm pretty sure left the collection (not sure which zoo it has gone to), don't know what's happened to the Pademelon.

Bit of a shame to see how Drayton Manor's collection has dwindled down over the past years. Especially with the loss of Dora the Tiger, there's not an awful lot left aside from Maned wolves, tapirs, porcupines, capybara, lynx, fishing cats, and hosts of birds, monkeys, amphibians and reptiles.

Was the anoa male or female and what was his / her name? Where was the animal transferred to?
