With some delay by the long winter, Dresden Zoo opens a new enclosure on coming monday. On the place where first a monkey-rock was, there's now a brand-new enclosure with rocks and a savanah-part, altogether about 850 squar meters.
4 Meerkats ( 3 males and 1 female ) and 4 Cape Hyrax ( Procavia c. capensis ) will be the new residents of the enclosure.
The Cape Hyraxes came from Frankfurt Zoo and the sexes are given different by 2 sources:
one says it should be 1.3, the other says 0.4 (?).
The costs for this new exibit were no less then Euro 380.000 !
 
On July 2 a rare baby was born at Dresden, a Crowned lemur. Mother is the 5 year old Vintana. Last year she gave birth to a death young but this time the young seems to be healthy ! It's the first living baby of this species for Dresden Zoo.
 
2 rare breeding-results with European bird-species at Dresden :
on july 1 2 Ringed plovers hatched
on 15 july 15 3 Little grebes hatched
 
Reticulated Giraffe bull, Ulembo will move from Dresden to Katowice, Poland next week. Dresden will then keep a pure group of Kordofan Giraffe, with female/s to follow shortly from La Barben
 
Dresden Zoo has recieved a female Wooly monkey for its single male. Dresden is the only zoo in Germany currently keeping Wooly monkeys.
 
At the beginning of Dec. 2013 3 Buffon's macaws hatched. 1 has died but the other 2 are doing great.
 
A third Kordofan giraffe ( Gaia, female 2 years old ) arrived from France. Dresden is the only German zoo in which this sub-species can be seen.
 
New arrivals at Dresden :
one male and 2 females Nilgai's and a male Hog deer. The new animals will be housed together with the 5 female Hog deers which already lived at Dresden.
