Drills in mixed exhibits

Dear Group,

I would like to ask if any of you know of any mixed exhibits featuring drills except for the one in Atlanta Zoo?

I think I've heard of a few but can't recollect as to where they were or with which species. So, what species (primate taxa and other) do you know for sure have been mixed with drills, successfully and not so successfully. Drills hardly seem like the perfect candidate for such exhibits, but I guess their behavior isn't as aggressive is their appearance.

The Detroit Zoo's Great Apes of Harambee exhibit features two adolescent male Drills, an elderly female Mandrill, and three male gorillas in the same enclosure.

Drills are not as aggressive as they appear and the females tend to be more aggressive than the males (in my experience). As long as the drills were grouped with other primates, I'm sure there wouldn't be much of a problem.

I would be concerned if a zoo would attempt to mix drills with anything else, i.e. a duiker or red river hog, because they would react very differently.

In regards to other examples, I'm fairly certain San Diego and Lincoln Park also attempted to house drills with other species.

Drill and talapoin monkey

I thought there as an exhibit with pygmy hippo, siatunga, talapoin and drill (or am I making this up  )

I know that mandrill are mixed with pygmy hippo's aswell.

You're right (and with de Brazza monkeys and Egyptian goose too) see: http://www.zoochat.com/180/bioparc-landscapes-enclosures-35094/

I'm not sure if they've been introduced yet, but Woburn Safari Park is in the process of adding Drills to an established Barbary Macaque/Patas Monkey/Bongo mixed drive-through exhibit.

I cannot add any further details about collections that currently keep drills in mixed exhibits. However, in her book “Mammalian Hybrids”, Annie P. Gray records the following hybrids have been bred in zoos:-

drill x white-collared mangabey
drill x crab-eating macaque
drill x Moor macaque
drill x pig-tailed macaque
drill x Hamadryas baboon
drill x Guinea baboon
drill x mandrill

so drills have evidently been kept in mixed exhibits with various other primates in the past........

Lincoln Park Zoo tried a mixed-species exhibit w/ our drill for a short time w/ the deBrazzas. It didn't work because the deBrazzas were territorial and Max, our drill, who is formidable looking, was leery of them.

Thank you all very much for your replies. Is there anyone here who works with drills, or has worked with them? If so, can you please contact me in private?
