Just watched the Zoo Chritmas Special on RTE and it was great viewing. It was filmed during the big freeze up and showed how the keepers and animals coped with the unusually very severe conditions. The footage of the animals in the snow was brilliant esp. the snow leopards, tigers and wolves which were in their element. The keepers came accross very well and ciaran and gerry are tv stars in the making lol.
One major problem was to try to keep the lakes ice free to prevent the monkeys escaping from the islands as they were observed checking out the possibilities lol.
The vet was giving the painted dog pups their shots and he said the intention was to keep that litter with the pack till the adults bred again so that they could learn how to parent etc. and only then to transfer them to other zoos. I was wondering how this fitted in with the eaza dictat re five year breeding gaps.
anyway well worth a watch and it is available on rte player online.

I think it's only available within Ireland. I often watch RTE via the internet but I get the international version and the Zoo doesn't seem to be on it. :(

Thats a pity, as it is well worth a watch. There are no boring parts as is usual with some such programs, and it moves along at a great pace with good editing and useful information. The only surprise was the delay in showing this programme as it was obviously filmed in nov/dec 2010.

I was at the zoo today as they are doing a facebook promotion for the month of december and tickets are only 2. 50e each. They are trying to push for over a million visitors and judgeing by the crowds today in such bad weather they should hit their target easily.

I've seen both series on DVD at an Irish friends house and loved them. Gerry is definitely a star in the making, he popped up everywhere.

I heard a rumour (on here I think) that it would be aired in the UK, but I can't find any transmission dates. I've left a message on the fb page for the series. They also have a really nice website: The Zoo Tv Series
