Dublin Zoo Dublin Zoo news 2024

Devastating news. That’s two elephants they’ve lost to EEHV in a very short period of time since importing Aung Bo.

The way you have worded your post could be seen as implying here Aung Bo is to blame which I think you need to be very careful about.

However I don't know enough about the virus or how it is transmitted to know whether or not that may have been a factor.

Elderly chimpanzee Betty, the zoo's longest-standing resident, passed away today at the ripe old age of 62. Below is a nice tribute to her written by one of the team leaders.

Dublin Zoo pays tribute to beloved chimpanzee Betty - Dublin Zoo

With so many notable animals dying this year, this is clearly not a good year for Dublin Zoo :(. But at least Betty had a long and happy life.

Stupidity, opportunism and anti everything including conservation at large reigns at PETA. Why do social media and the newspapers keep giving these idiots page time in print still. Absolutely appaling...

Having said that ....

Now Samiya has tested positive for EEHV :(. Hopefully, she and Asha will win their battles with this abominable virus, especially knowing that they're confirmed to have antibodies.

Dublin Zoo | Dublin
I am far from happy how Dublin Zoo is handling the EEHV issue right now. One elephant contracting EEHV is an incident that may happen at any time, two would be more indicative of a major problem ... but three, and then four ... Mmmm!!!!

Anyone know what treatment protocol the Dublin Zoo now has in place?

Male Asian lion arrives:

Dublin Zoo welcomes new male Asian lion Kushanu

Dublin Zoo has welcomed a new Asian lion from Edinburgh Zoo.

Five-year-old Kushanu has joined nine-year-old female, Kamala, at the Asian lion habitat located beside Sea Lion Cove and close to the red panda habitat.
Great news. The article refers the lions are near red pandas and sea lions so has the lion/tiger enclosure swap happened (I could be wrong but I believe there is also 1.2 other lions so I assume they share with Kushanu and Kamala on a rotating basis, based on the article's wording?)?

Well no need for protest then. Post mortems are a standard practice and they can find the financial records in the latest annual report, which is free to download....
Just pathetic these anti zoo campaigners. Hoaxers with fake news and complete self congratulatory tunnelvision pandemonium.

In fairness, I would like to investigate their truth factor and source of fake news. Maybe put Bellingcat or similar on them.

As mentioned by @KevinB in the Zoo Antwerpen news thread: At the end of this month, 17-year-old female hippopotamus Imani will move from Zoo Antwerpen to Dublin Zoo.
Nice to see that Heidi (the resident hippo) will not be alone anymore, but I hope that they refrain from breeding the species and adding more animals (something which was referenced they want to do in the Antwerpen thread) until the enclosure is expanded.

So glad to hear the whole herd is out of the woods. However, one thing does concern me. If Aung Bo does successfully breed from any of the cows, what if none of them survive falling victim to EEHV? Three of his five calves born at Chester are now dead (two of whom succumbed to the virus), so what if this tragic story ends up being repeated in Dublin? For now at least, the four elephants are all doing well, and with the vaccine that's being developed, hopefully Dublin will be better prepared for when EEHV strikes again.
