It is impressing...24 years. Today was actually the first time I´ve seen her awake and close to the viewing window. She was lying, but she raised her head few times and began roaring, still pretty good voice she has. It was amazing, but very sad at the same time, no one there to answer her..

What do you mean by moving them to the Amur exhibit? Where would the Amur tigers go?

Oh, I don´t know... The indoor areas of Amur enclosure are not accessible to the public and I don´t know, how they look like. But I don´t think they´re big enough to allow this kind of rotation. The Arctic Fox enclosure is pretty big, some even say too big for one small fox, so this might be the best option for now.

The old African Lioness is still alive, but I was told that it won´t be an issue. (Her enclosure is pretty far and completely separated, so I don´t see any problems either.)

Presumably they have waived the usual 'Asians only' rule for holders in this case because the remaining African female is so old that x breeding would be an impossibility.;)

the single arctic fox, maybe?
since the arrival of the current director it is very hard to get advance news about dublin zoo plans or new arrivals. even the keepers/workers in the zoo often dont know or are sworn to secrecy. the website is only usually updated with halloween and santa type stuff with very little animal news.
when dr. terry murphy was director he was always full of news and new ideas and was very accessable and friendly.
still the current methods and pr. seem to be working, judging by visitor numbers.
 
The artic fox enclosure was originally built for Amur tigers so is more than adequate! The Amurs moved when the polar bears left to Sosto zoo in Hungary!

Dublin zoo is a great zoo with an amazing team of friendly and very knowledgeable keepers! Looking forward to see the new developments! :)

You´re right,Dublinion, it´s not easy to get some information. Unless you´re there and lucky to meet a keeper with a bit of time and willing to talk. I´m there quite often, but only during the week, not the weekends, and is often very hard to meet someone like that. They claim to have enough staff and volunteers, but on the regular non-busy weekday you don´t see many of them, and if you do, they´re usually too busy to talk to you.
I was lucky yesterday, got the update from one very nice guy-keeper in Reptile house. But that was after 3 hours long walk around the zoo, looking for anybody to answer my question, what happened to the fox.

I mean, simple sign saying "Arctic Fox was moved of exhibit, we´re rebuilding the enclosures because of ....." would solve that.

There is always more than enough staff on the grounds,in winter times the zoo closes earlier but the same amount of work still has to be done!!.Thats may be why you dont see them,there working!Also the staff ar always happy to answer questions about the zoo,but some times plans take awhile to finalise so until they know what is happing for sure,they dont want to give out wrong or misleading information.
 
I am not saying they´re not doing a good job. I know they are pretty busy. That´s why I am often not even trying to ask, I can see they´re running from place to place and that I would just interrupt their routine.

But at the same time, people like us would like to be informed on the progress and that´s really hard with Dublin Zoo. As a member, I´m getting the Zoo Matters magazine every 3 month, but there isn´t much in there, and if it is, it´s not a fresh news. So I signed up for email newsletters in October and didn´t get any email at all since then.

Most of the things the website, most of the events and most of things in the magazine are focused on kids or families. There´s not too much for people like us.

But you´re right that the staff can be really helpful, if they do have time - I used their help few times, when I needed something for assignments.
 
I think that info was on another Dublin zoo thread but I'm sure I could be wrong! Would be nice to see! I've always seen a lot of very busy keepers around the zoo! Who knows what future species any zoo will get and I apologise if I have misinformed but that was not my intention! All I know whatever it will be, Dublin will do it amazingly!

Some major reconstructions are starting now - Sumatran Tigers were temporarily moved to the Arctic Fox enclosure and that all area from the entrance gate to the end of the big cat enclosures will be rebuilt. (The fox is alive and well, just off exhibit for now.)

The reconstruction works will take about 3 month.

does that include the snow leopard areas. when i was last there just after xmas. the enclosure neareast the gate had one snow leopard then sumatran tigers and then two snow leopards.

Snow leopards were in the "usual" snowleopard enclosure, the first enclosures were empty yesterday.
 
stefka, during the building of the new gorilla enclosure, i heard from a reliable source that dublin intended to add pygmy hippos around that area. and i see on dublins zootierlist page that these are included on their species list. so its either a mistake by zootierlist or dublin is indeed planning to add these. maybe in the african lion area when the old girl passes on?
although jaguar are also on that species list, so maybe they are getting new jaguars?
 
The new habitat will be called "Asian Forest" and will contain Asiatic Lions, Sumateran Tigers and Asian Small-Clawed Otters.
