Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo News 2022

More births...

0.0.18 bats born. Unclear whether they are referring to the Egyptian fruit bats or the Seba's short-tailed bats (who share the same enclosure), or whether they've had offspring from both.

What else is in the Castle Creatures exhibit with the bats? The website isn't very clear and while it is marked on their map, it doesn't detail what they have.

Black rats, brown rats, house mice, medicinal leech, house spider, bluebottle(?)
There might be a couple I’m missing there but that’s what I can remember…

... plus earthworms and Roman snails I think.

Tbh it's very unlikely that you'll see anything apart from the rats, bats and mice. However, there're some good interactive educational displays in there and a good display at the start all about the history of the castle.

Certainly not a 'must-see' part of the zoo, but worth going into if you've not been in before.

Sounds pretty good, when I visit the zoo in the Summer I'll see if I can fit it in. I only have one bat species on my Zoo Life List so far (Rodrigues), so it'll be nice to add a couple more.

Had a lovely visit today - weather was pleasant and I managed to avoid the crowds for the most part.

I got a brief glimpse of the wolverine in a wooden shelter at the back of her enclosure. No sign of the Arctic fox (es) - not sure how many are left. Unusually, there was no sign of Daseep (female Sumatran tiger) - only the male, Joao, sunning himself on top of the wooden platform.

All three giraffes were out in the paddock and seemed fine. The palm civet, binturongs, giant anteaters and sloths were all fast asleep so I didn't get to see the baby anteater or the baby sloth.

The outdoor area for the orangs is very nearly finished and they are hoping to allow the orangs into it at the end of the month. The gibbons were very active and put on a stunning gymnastic display.

There are 6 penguins left, although I only saw one. The Zoo is putting a number of measures in place to hopefully prevent an outbreak of avian malaria in the future before they bring in any new penguins.

The baby camels were very sweet. One (Queenie?) was exactly a week old and the other was 16 days old.

Yes, and the door to the indoor den was open so I presumed it/they were indoors or curled up where we couldn't see it - the grass is quite long at the back of the enclosure.
i went to the zoo saturday Finn the last artic fox was there trying to dig to australia i think ha hes looking well

Can anyone tell me what the situation is with the Orangutans currently? It has been a while (several years) since I last visited.

I know they are hopefully nearing completion of the new enclosure. Are Jazz and Sprout in with Djimat or Benji? Can all four be seen or is one male off-show for now?

Thanks :)
