The zoo has submitted a planning application for a new two storey, 1,100 square metre, visitor and education centre.
The proposed new building will be located adjacent to the main entrance on land that is currently occupied by a series of old maintenance and workshop buildings – which will be demolished.
The building will contain formal and informal teaching and learning spaces including a lecture theatre, seminar and tutorial rooms as well as an educational laboratory complemented by hospitality and breakout spaces.
It will also include an exhibition area, space for the storage of artefacts and educational objects, and a library.
The 1930s Discovery Centre Tecton at the top of the zoo is currently used as the zoo's education building, but no longer provides adequate facilities. It also requires major, lengthy restoration work and once this is complete the zoo plans to return it to its original function as a café. Therefore this purpose-built new building, which has been designed to be economically and environmentally sustainable, will replace the Discovery Centre as the zoo's education hub.
The zoo states, “
The main use of the building will be as an educational resource for school-aged children, but other education workshops will be offered and the new facility will also provide a meeting and conference space outside term time and school hours."
The zoo currently welcomes an average of 18,000 learners a year and the goal is to increase the number of students attending the zoo's education and conservation programme to approximately 50,000 per year.
Those using the building will have easy access into the zoo via a "link bridge".
Furthermore, the plans will also allow for future reinstatement of the Stores Cavern Mine tunnel and will provide access to the mine from outside the zoo as part of the upcoming Black Country Geopark trail.
For the design of the building, architects say they have drawn inspiration from the zoo's Tecton buildings. Not much inspiration by the looks of it since the Tectons are all about
curved concrete, but perhaps they are referring to the interior.
Wildflowers, grass, and whitebeam trees will be planted around the edge of the building.
