Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo News 2023

The male red panda passed away too. Thought it was strange he wasn't mentioned in the news, since he has been there for many years.

According to the official Isle of Man government website, three male Humboldt penguin chicks have been sent from Curraghs Wildlife Park to Dudley Zoo.

Confirmation from the zoo that three male 10-month-old juveniles arrived last week and are currently being housed in an off-show area.

The zoo has also confirmed that only 5 members of the original 70-strong colony survived the outbreak of avian malaria that hit in early 2022.

Look forward to seeing them, it must be so sad for the keepers to remember the old colony as that was a huge number of birds and so impressive but it is great to see it being built back up.

Good day out at Dudley today, warm and sunny. Was pretty quiet from opening to lunch time, lots of people in the afternoon.

The new wallaby enclosure is complete and looks very tidy with the wallabies in residence. All glass fronted with a shelter at one end. Took a few phone pics.

Enjoyed the new aviaries opposite the sloths. A few pictures of the aviaries and signed species attached. The large aviary on the right hand side next to the Made coffee stall is signed as going to be replaced by a picnic area.

Lots of work going on on the new / improved red panda enclosure. Pics attached of that too.

Good number of active animals. The giraffes were out in their paddock though the house was still closed off for some work. Enjoyed the foxes as usual. The lions were out and about as were the tigers. The Orangs were also outdoors now and again so got some lovely sightings of the young ones. The young sloth and binturong were also outside for a while. The chimps were in their outside space enjoying the sun.

The open viewing for the flamingoes was closed off though they can be seen through the glass.

The enclosure at the top of the chair lift that’s a wildflower / bee place now has a sign that wild badgers have moved in.

There didn’t seem to be much sign of a snow leopard cub, both the adults were out.

All round enjoyable day.

Many thanks for the interesting updates @Lafone. The upgraded Parma wallaby enclosure looks great; it appears to have been extended to the left as well and is a very smart improvement on what was there before. I also had no idea how substantial the work being done to the red panda enclosure was (I wonder if the new viewing area will be roofed).

Wonderful to see all the continued improvements. The zoo just doesn't seem to stop building these days.

Were there any changes to the penguin enclosure?

Did the new giraffe paddock behind the house look near completion?

There have been wild badgers living under the top of the chairlift and in that old wallaby enclosure for quite a few years now. Personally I find this very strange given other zoo's relationship with badgers, but presumably the zoo has things under close control. Wild Eurasian badgers - ZooChat

Also, in the politest way possible, I really wish you'd upload all your photos to the Dudley Zoo gallery where they belong. Construction photos in particular, as well as photos of signage and newly completed projects, make up some of the most interesting and historically significant additions to the gallery. Being in the gallery also makes it possible for them to be found when carrying out a search.

:)

I'll put them in the gallery, as they are just phone pics I wasn't sure they belonged somewhere grand! Guess I spend all day taking photos of animals so my enclosure snaps are a bit potato. But will pop them in.

I do love badgers, but am guessing that's a visitor dream given nocturnal habits and opening hours let alone shyness!

I didn't notice any changes to the penguin enclosure, a few of the houses look a bit rickety so guess they might fix those up but the number won't use them all even when added to. The pool was very clean and clear and the general area was tidy and the bushes well cut etc so guess some early Spring gardening had been going on.

The new giraffe paddock looked pretty far along with a lot of the new fencing in and fixed together / seated. Still a few diggers etc in the space. Early in the day the whole walkway down to the house was closed off but later it was only closed off right near the house.
