Other 2023 News:

On January 31st, the zoo announced they moved some geladas (Ebano, Tana, Jimma, and Addis and their brood) into the former Sulawesi crested macaque exhibit.

On April 2nd, the zoo announced they revamped their Philippine sail-finned lizard exhibit in the Reptile House.

On April 3rd, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) red-necked wallaby was born and has now appeared out of the pouch.

On April 13th, the zoo announced that (0.0.~80) giant grasshoppers (species not specified) hatched which are now on exhibit in the farm barn.

On April 25th, the zoo announced they introduced the male penguins to the rest of the flock which are now on exhibit.

On May 1st, the zoo announced that (0.0.12) Egyptian fruit bats were born over a span of a couple weeks.

On May 2nd, the zoo announced that they moved their (1.1) collared hill partridges into the Lorikeet Lookout exhibit.

Had a lovely visit here today sun out all day and not to busy which was nice, I guess everybody is bank holidayed out and taking a breather .l’m always impressed with what they do here with wood and wire ( and glass ) enclosures you always get the feeling something is always being added to to collection along with the historical enclosures. All the animals seamed to love the weather also and can’t think of any no shows and most where outside at some part of the day, saw all the new additions both black lemurs new born’s and reindeer young. The giraffe house is back open with viewing windows into the new side being installed and inspection fencing installed, think the door to the new section is also installed but struggle to see clearly at the far end of the house. Will post some pics up all in all great day, one more think the 90’s coke machines around the site have had new front’s on them great as the where so dated, but having seen the new ones kinda miss them already.

We were there today too!
Got very lucky with the baby Lemurs, stood there for about an hour, they are so cute!

'Baby' Binturong was very active, and so were the parents, at least when we passed, all being in the outside enclosure.

The new red panda enclosure is coming along very nicely.

And spotted a new 'wildlife' path where the temporary red panda is. The gate was locked though. Curious to see what that's about.

EDIT sorry, completely misread the date on your post... Just now realised it says yesterday, not today

When I visited on Saturday it appeared it was almost complete, the new viewing area was pretty much done and there were just a few bits being added to the enclosure itself. On a separate note, there were modifications being made to the flamingo enclosure as well, which looked like a new covered, glass-fronted viewing area.
 
The upgrade to the hillside red panda enclosure is complete and Ember and Carko have already moved in.

The upgrades to what was an already excellent enclosure include:
- A new large, wooden climbing frame.
- New nest boxes.
- A new on-show indoor area.
- A large new public viewing gallery.
- New signage.

I haven't had any responses to this yet. There's plenty to write about already if anyone is interested.
 
Sadly Kyra the lion has passed away. Apparently a new lion is due to arrive in a few months (as already planned)

Visited yesterday (1st June) was crowded as expected so just a quick go round. Was impressed with the new Red Panda enclosure. Carko the new male was busy investigating.

Talks of a baby sloth. Wasn’t visible my last few visits, however sloths are difficult to spot at the best of times.

Yeah, I've found it pretty hard to see the sloths on my visits as they're usually staying around at the back of their indoor viewing area. Maybe you might have better luck going on a quieter day (when most kids are in school).

I'm glad they've finished work on renovating the Red panda enclosure, looks fantastic and I like that they built an on-show indoor area for them too (think most zoos should invest in that for Red pandas to protect them from Winter colds).

Sorry to hear about Kyra, she was a beautiful animal and will be dearly missed. I hope the new lion they're getting will be a male as they haven't had any since Gir's passing (about 5 years ago I think).

That's sad news, sympathy to the keepers after she's been there a long time.

A female sloth was born last year. Do you mean that one or are there rumours of a new recent birth?

Gir was a female. She left Dudley in 2009, aged ~15, for Cotswold’s Wildlife Park due to being post-reproductive. She passed away at CWP in 2011 aged 17.

Gir was a female. She left Dudley in 2009, aged ~15, for Cotswold’s Wildlife Park due to being post-reproductive. She passed away at CWP in 2011 aged 17.

A very new recent birth. (Regarding the sloths)
 
The zoo has announced via social media, that 2 male Coahuilan Box Turtles have been stolen from the reptile house in what is believed to be a targeted theft, due to them being the only UK collection with the species.

The National Wildlife Crimes Unit and West Midlands Police are currently investigating the theft.
