Dudley Zoo Update 2012

Visit 20th September

Bit chilly up on Castle Hill today.

Still haven't managed to see the baby tapir, the baby howler monkey or the baby red panda. However I did manage to see a glimpse of the male Carpathian lynx (or more accurately a glimpse of part of the male Carpathian lynx!) who is still very shy and hiding at the back of the enclosure. :)

There is a baby Emperor Tamarin in the primate house at the back of the Discovery Centre.

The steps that lead from the top path by the tiger tecton down to the glass viewing panel have been renewed and reopened. The steps in front of the middle tecton holding the Asiatic black bear have been cordoned off so perhaps they may be next to be replaced?

One of the pools in the tapir enclosure was being filled in whilst I was there as it has been leaking badly.

I already was more than pleased with what I experienced and seen at Dudley Zoo. Those Tecton buildings a well ...!

Breeding yellow breasted capuchins and the recent addition of Carpathian lynx ... Kudos to the Mammal Team.

Having the lynx and actually seeing them are two different things lol.

I was extremely lucky to see him - he is very well camouflaged and hides right at the back of the enclosure. Whilst my friend and I were peering at the leaves he stood up, turned round and lay back down again. If it hadn't been for him moving, we would never had seen him. At least I'll know where to look next time when, hopefully, there might be less foliage to hide behind:)

Apparently, the female lynx was sitting right by the window of the indoor enclosure earlier in the day in full view of passers by - unfortunately, it wasn't when we where there:(

Angel, do you know if the male and female are mixed yet?

OK thanks,I hope to go soon too so hope to get a glimpse of either of them.
I was wondering if they are together because they are not known to each other so wondered how long they would be kept apart to stop possible fighting.

Those varmints cant hide from me forever:D

'Varmints'- lovely expression! :D I think it comes from the deep South of the US. and normally refers to smaller mammal 'nuisance' species- Coyote, Rabbit, Squirrel, Marmot, Raccoon, Skunk, Bobcat etc. Not a term you hear over here very often.

My gran used to use it for foxes and it's stuck with me as it's a great word, not sure it fits lynx but I like it!

Baby pygmy marmosets

This morning's Zoo News bulletin mentions that 2 baby pygmy marmosets have been born in the last few days.

Visit 9th October

Really enjoyed my visit today - expecially as I managed to see virtually all the 'no shows' from previous visits:)

The baby red panda was in the nesting box but I did catch several glimpses of it moving around in there - mainly it's ears and the top of it's head but one view of it lengthways as it nestled against the female - as far as I could tell, it's fur is still quite grey.

Saw the baby howler monkey and the 2 baby pygmy marmosets. The baby gibbon is starting to become more independent and forage next to the adults.

The snow leopards were pretty active - leaping around the enclosure and mock fighting (makes a change from them being fast asleep on one of the top platforms!)

Best of all, I saw one of the Carpathian lynxes - stunningly beautiful.

The only downside to the day was that I still haven't seen Eve, the baby tapir.
