Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo

I wish Dudley zoo had a surface of around 20 to 30 ha,in oreder to expand and develop some neexciting exhibits such as Wallaceum,it is an idea of my own,this could be a magnificent complex for Sulawesi and its islands wildlife,anoas,black crested macaques,bear cususes spectral tarsiers and then a large aviary 5000 sq metres for a range of endemics.

Is Dudley Zoo a municipal concern or not?

If so, could one not sue the Tory Government and English Heritage for negligence on animal welfare grounds (cause promised funding shortfalls is the major cause of not being able to modernise and renovate)?
 
I made my first visit to Dudley in 2003 just before the African elephants Flossie and Flora were moved to pastures new. This was my first visit and unfortunately I have yet to make a second. What I had heard and read about it was not always favourable, however I went there with an open mind to draw my own conclusions. Firstly,on arrival the car park was strewn with broken glass, in fact I was rather dubious about leaving my car there unattended, something I have never felt at any other zoo car park. On entering I was conscious of the fact that it had been a popular zoo, one could imagine the large crowds making their way through the turnstiles and later having dinner in that outdated cafeteria, I appreciate that a lot at Dudley is listed but is there any excuse for Coke tins and other litter to be floating in the water of the moat at that horrible old orang house?, and I am sure it had not just been thrown in that day. Quite frankly I found the visit to be slightly depressing and that's coming from someone who likes nothing better than a good day out at a zoo, especially to a one where I had not been before.I sincerely hope that things change for Dudley in the future, as I see it, it has two options, hopefully things will improve and it can rank with the likes of Colchester and Paignton or close down and go with what little dignity it has left rather than suffer the indignity of featuring in some television programme about Britain's worst day out attractions as happened to poor old Glasgow just before it closed for good in 2003.
 
Dudley does have its problems but has improved lots since your visit. I'd suggest you give it another try and you might be plesently surprised.

And I'm sure the elephant moved long before 2003.....

I would hope the zoo goes it alone. Perhaps that is the best option available. Do loads of project building work in house and with own workforce. Better position its society.

IMO there is nothing to be expected from big investors nor municipality or English Heritage. All have been pretty darn ***less. ;)
 
Dudley could develop within 16 months work LEMURIA a compound depicting Madagascar´s rich biodiversity within a surface of 20.000 sq metres with large indoor
areas,and aviary and terrarium,a good example to follow suit for English zoo would be Valencia´s new zoo Bioparc,I recommend it to you all,it features only African species,
Madagascar,the African savanna and The congo basin,you know.Bioparc Valencia | Naturaleza en abierto
 
I will be making my last visit of the year to the zoo on the 29th December weather permitting so will try and see if I can get some information for you then.
Also it was very sad to here about Sarah she will be missed by all as she was such a beautiful looking animal.
Will try and get update as to where the Camels will be coming from also try and get update on the arrival of the female Giraffes and the male Snowleopards.
I was told there was movement on the arrival of some new primates for the primate house but will wait and see unless someone else has any information on this.
Also does anyone know where the sacred ibis and the kockaburra has gone as they were not there on my last 2 visits
 
Does anybody know about Moscow 145 anniversary by 2015,please?,How about Glagow´s zoo to reopen,please?.A report from news.scotland announced that a pair of giant pandas from China would go to Glagow´s new zoo and a Amazonian rain forest complex.

Frank, you're posting in a Dudley zoo thread, you'd get better responses posting your questions in the threads of moscow and glasgow respectively.
 
Dudley Zoo confirmed in there Winter 2010 members/adopters magazine that the male Snow Leopard will be coming from Banham Zoo. However the cat in question (Maargash) is only 8 months old at present so I wouldn't expect him to be moved to Dudley until next summer at the earliest.
 
Wow, thanks Nisha, I took the trip to see Banhams cubs in the summer, how great that one is heading up this way!
On a related note, I know in primates it's easier to get adults to accept youngsters than adults, is this the same in cats? If so this may explain the choice of young mate for a cat which has previously not accepted another cat?
 
Nanga is very young herself the cat I think you are on about as now left the zoo and it was male not female

I believe Nanga is about 18 months? Banham had a litter of 1:2 cubs from there 1:1 in May this year. Dudley Zoo confirmed via there members and adopters magazine (Zoonooz) that they had a male sourced from Banham and expected him to be transfered at some point next year.

Yes sorry I do know about this as you have said earlier on in the thread I was replying to a comment by Devi

I thought he was on about the male and female they used to have at the zoo before the unfortunate death of the female.
By the way are there any updates on Wutia (Snow Leopard) as he settled in well or is he still dangerous to females
 
I havent visited Dudley for a long time but it does have a soft spot with me despite some of it's shortcomings.
About 12 years ago one of my weirdest experiences at any zoo occurred here. A man in explorers gear with a bow and arrow climbed onto the slow leopard enclosure ready to shoot at these beuatiful problems! I presume he had some kind of mental health problems-whilst we thought this was en event two zoo keepers took him away just in time!

I have two questions:
Do you know when the outdoor enclosures of the orangutans will be revamped (phase 2)?
And what's in the woodland where the wildfowl walkthrough used to be?

Willtheman45 I can answer both questions for you
1 Phase 2 of the Orangutan House refurb should be started very shortly and the Answer to the other one is it's now a very good Walk Through called Lemur Wood
