I'm not going to keep putting new threads on here so thought I'd put one I could use all year round.

News on the Orangutan House should be ready early April as due to bad weather slight delay
The old Otter enclosure is again to be used for Otters this is the one by the Avairies and Porcupines I think the new litter may be going in or I'd prefer the old ones as they are used to being outside
Asianis Lions - females now being let out one at a time this is to get them used to coming indoors at night as when at Twycross they allegedly had problems getting them in at night.
Ronnie the Tapir - is now in the main indoor house and can be seen through the window.
Male snow leopard seems to be doimg fine after the terrible incident with the female.
Jill the Raven off show - she is such a lovable bird, she loves playing with twigs and getting you to tug them through the cage (Adults only and at thier own risk) unsure as yet to what as happend.
Reptile House - noticed one or two show areas empty and no notices to say why. The African Broad Fronted Crocodile in the small show area will be moving shotly be a larger exhibat.
Giraffe - no new male giraffe as yet and apparently not for some time to come as the South Lakes deal fell through due to paper work hold up.

I will update in future only once a month but if you have any questions you would like me to ask then let me know and I'll see if I can get some answers for you

Does this mean there going to move the otters from the monkey tails thing or are they getting another pair or different species????

I went on Monday and asked about Jill, she's been moved into the elephant house while work is carried out on her cage.
You are right about her being lovable and the game she likes to play with twigs, she nearly drew blood from my finger!!

Glad that the otters are moving back to their pool, it didn't really work with ducks or whatever was in there!

Did you notice the good use of conifers around the zoo, the Asiatic bear now has a hide made from them.

Both female lions were still inside when I visited, but Sarah was shut outside in the freezing cold, I felt sorry for her.

Sarah was shut outside on Monday as they had to sort out a problem with the heating inside the night time enclosure.
Itar is still not in with the females as they are trying to trian the lionesses to come back in once they've been out in the enclosure for a while if all goes well should be they all enjoy the enclosure together pretty shortly.
They've used the conifers really well and did you notice the use of the largetree trunks again used well for enrichment for the animals

Yes anything in the Barbary Sheep pen is an improvement even a massive tree trunk!

Lion update.

Went today and one of the female lions was out with Itar, the other girl was pacing around all the time I was watching.

Were the four penguins still in the old otter enclosure or have they moved to another zoo yet.
Also has the African Broad Fronted Crocodile been moved out of the reptile house yet or is it still awaiting a new location.
Is the Orangutan house still on course to open in early April.
Did you know the Otters are to be moved back to there old enclosure from the Monkey Tails enclosure as this is going to be used for another exhibit.
Have they arranged a date for the impending arrival of the Male Giraffe.
Jill is back in the enclosure couldn't see any refurbishment in the enclosure.
Were the Black Lemurs out in the Lemur Wood because everytime I go it's there turn to stay inside.

Yes the 4 penguins are still in the old / new otter pool area, and thanks for telling me why they are there as I did wonder.

Didn't go in the reptile house so can't help with that question.

Unless they get a move on I don't think the Orang house will be ready for Easter, there still sems to be alot to be cleared up, but I'm not an expert on building work so they might surprize us.

All three species of lemur were out today enjoying the sun.

And Jill, well yes I also noticed nothing had been done with her pen!

Still no sign of baby Ronnie for me..........

.

Have they sourced a new bull then as I thought the deal for the male from South Lakes fell through due to paperwork? If so do you know where he is coming from?

Baby Ronnie was in the indoor enclosure last time I was there and I know he usally is around by the back old style pig hut. He can usally be seenafter about 3pm for some reason it's rare to see him before.
There should be four types of Lemur in the wood (Ring Tailled, Black & White Ruffed, Collard and Black Lemurs)
I was thinking the same about the Orangutan House everytime I ask about it they say the weather as held them up.
Did you notice the little bald patch at the top of sarah's right rear leg apparently she caught it while moving from one of the indoor pens to another while they cleaned her out last week (nothing to worry about as it looks alot worse then it is).

In that case no I didn't see the black lemurs, and like you have never seen them, I thought there were only 3 types in there.....

Sarah was lying down on her lookout so I didn't see her leg, she looked fine as ever.

Guess I wont be seeing Ronnie for a while as I usually get to the zoo shortly after 10 am and I'm gone long before he puts in an appearance.

Update 19/03/10
There has been a baby Barbary sheep born it was born 18/03/10 pictures on gallery.
The orangutan house should be open Easter there still seems a little work to do on it but it does look alot better for the Orangutans then the out dated facilities they had before picturs again in the gallery I've used thumb pic's to save on space on the gallery.
The four Penguins have now gone to another zoo not sure which one yet.
they are hoping the Icelandic Sheep are in lamb as the female as been acting strangely lately.
There duck collection seems to be growing as over the last few weeks there as been some new arrivals in the pool (no labels up to say what they am at the moment)
Just to clear up a little thing about the sea lions they have not bred at the zoo since they arrived,
Baby gibbon and mother doing really well will put photo's in gallery tomorrow 20/03/10
Sarah now well again and looking beautiful as normal.
will update again shortly.

Update 04/04/10

New arrivals in the Primate House unable to go in to find out which ones have had babies yet as the Primate House was closed.
This Primate House holds Geoldis Monkey, Ring Tailed Lemur, Black & White Ruffed Lemur, Red Ruffed Lemur, Squirrel Monkey and Pygmy Marmosets.
Primate House number one will be completed and strengthened for the arrival of Macaques as soon as the Orang-utan House is complete.
The African Broad Fronted Crocodile (Male) as gone to London Zoo for breeding purposes and Dudley now has only 2 females left.
One of the one year old male Otters has now left the collection and moved on (unknown location)
Saw the Mongoose Lemur for the first time (in the old Elephant House)

No shows were

Porcupines (again)
Wallaby's in walk through
Rhea
Barbarusa
Yellow mongoose
this may have something to do with the weather as it was raining pretty heavy on this visit.

Jet the male otter went to Tropiquaria in Somerset along with a meerkat.

The croc went to London Aquarium not the zoo.

Any plans now to get a male orang?
And most significantly when?

They have two male Orangutans;

Benjamin- adult nonbreeding male- came originally from Europe, has been at Dudley about fifteen years.
Jorong- younger breeding male, loan from Dublin, has been at Dudley about 3(?) years.

The two females are Azimat(w/b) and Jaz(Azimat x Joe)

Benjamin lives with Azimat. Jorong lives with Jaz.. Jorong and Jaz have bred but the baby died. They could breed from Azimat again by putting her with Jorong.

If they talk about two ' breeding groups' they probably mean they hope to breed from both females- they do not need to add any more Orangs.

Sorry about that only repeating what the staff told me.
Didn't know about the Meerkat many thanks for that, do you know who they sent.
Unsure if they are going to bring in a male Orang-utan yet but they have said they intend to have 2 breeding groups very shortly.

All I know is that it's mate had died and it was being kept apart from the rest of the group. When the people from Tropiquaria arrived to collect the otter they saw the meerkat and offered to take it and pair it up with one of there's.
