Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoological Gardens in 2010

They've settled in well with the other 11 and the Kings. Got bit by one earlier! Just need to name them now

Unsure if they are going to bring in a male Orang-utan yet but they have said they intend to have 2 breeding groups very shortly.

They're unlikely to have the space unless they sent one of the existing two males elsewhere. The older one 'Ben' isn't really much use to them as he doesn't seem able to breed, so maybe they will do an exchange for him. But if (the younger male) Jorong stays at Dudley, they don't need to bring in another male, as one male and two females is a perfectly viable unit for breeding.

Just a quick update - babies in the primate house include - Geoldi, Ring-tailed Lemur, 2x Pygmy Marmoset, 2x Emperor Tamarins (p.s they are new)

they've now mixed their 2 capybaras and the new male giraffe seems to be fine as well as the large otter family

Still no definite date as yet to when the Otters will be returning to there original outdoor enclosure next to the Porcupines.
There are at least 4 new Hunboltds Penguins born in the last 3 weeks
the 2 groups of Saki Monkeys have again been reintroduced to each other this time it looks like it's working
A new male Muscovy Duck was donated to the zoo and is now happily waddling around in the farmyard along with the females.
The Capybara's now look a lot better after having treatment for a skin infection and where back out in the enclosure with the Mara and Tapir, nice to see Ronnie (young Tapir) running around in the enclosure.
One side of the Orang utan house was off show from the outdoors today unsure as to why no one around by the house to ask
Timor Monitor was off show today (07 - 05 - 2010) and there was a Spiny Tailed Lizard in the home of the Monitor.
Asiatic lions were getting very friendly today and seemed to be getting on really well.
Chimpanzees I actually went to these first for a change and to my surprise they were actually all out in the paddock having loads of fun with the climbing frame slide and there was lots of food around in the paddock.
Still haven't used the Boobock Owl cage toput something in or the small paddock next to the Barirusa this could be used to extend thier enclosure or extend the Rhea's enclosure instead of leaving it empty.
I have past on an idea that they should get some species of deer for the side of the hills this way people would have something to look at and admire while keeping the dense foilage under better control.
does anyone else have any ideas as what could go on the hills at the zoo

Just a few questions regarding the big cats

Have they sourced another Snow Leopard?

How is Sarah the tiger doing?

Sarah is doing really well, shes such a lovely and beautiful animal, no news on the snow leopard at the moment, but the Primate house is now under going refurbishment for the arrival of some macques unsure how many and when they will arrive but they couildn't get this ready until they had completed phase one of the orangutan house.
They have now moved the male Black Lemurs from the Lemur wood and put them in the old Elephant House enclosure by the Wallaby walk through.
The Mongoose Lemurs have now been moved to the Primate house were the female and male Black Lemurs were, these are now in the Lemur Wood.

I couldnt agree more, Sarah is most definitely my favorite at Dudley, she is also my yearly adoption :)

Such a shame about them suddenly losing the baby Gibbon Lily though, was more than sad to hear that news :(

Yes it was sad news about Lily, they have had some bad luck with the Gibbons as this is the second young they have lost, but heres hoping they do not give up on this species as they are very fasinating to watch move around there enclosure.
Oh forgot to say that all the young in the second primate house are all doing well

What happend with Lily?

She unfortunatly passed away over the weekend of 8th or 9th of May it's still unclear what she died of even after a post mortem it was unclear what was wrong.
She was a beautiful little Gibbon and I p/m some of the zoochatters who visited regular.
I felt it was unfair to make this public as the zoo was hit badly with the loss of Lily

After the death of Lily those who visited regular could see a big change in the behaviour of Lily's parents they didn't seem to be the same for at least 3 weeks, they are now starting to behave more like they did before Lily was born here's hoping to the future

R.I.P LILY

Got back earlier tonight and just put some photographs in the gallery

Good news I saw a young Parma Wallaby in the enclosure today at the back. One of the female Meerkats looks like she could be having young ones very soon.

There are still no signs of a new mate for the Snow Leopard and it was great to see Inca around the enclosure today (black bear).

Primate refurbishment now seems to be coming on and still haven't seen the Porcupines in the outdoor enclosure.

They're all yawning in your photo's from today Adrian, hot weather tiring them out do you think? :)

I have to agree about Inca, i was at the zoo on Monday and she was toddling around in her encosure quite happily (along with a rather large rat). It makes such a change from winter visits when she's in her little self made nest in the corner :)

And as for Wutai, i hope theyre looking into a new mate for him, he appears to look so bored and lonely most time i visit :(

By the way, you dont by anychance know whats happening with the Giraffes do you? Only Monday on the youngster and male were there.

Update

Some rather bad news to start off with :(

The zoo is now down from 1:3 Rothschild and 0:1 Hybrid giraffe to just 1:1 Rothschild. Sophie the hybrid departed from Blair Drummond a few weeks ago. Sadly the mother of the two female calves (she's called Clementine?) died due to Kidney Faliure shortly after. Not long after that keepers arrived one morning to find her elder calf (Korah) had died during the night. A post mortem revealed that she had a very small heart and she would of never made it to maturity. The remaining giraffe are Kubwah and Keyah. They have already contacted the studbook co-ordinator and are hoping to recieve at least one more female in the future.

Bam the African Wild Dog died last weekend. No details on what happend yet. The group is now made up of 3:0.

On a happier note

A female Babarusia arrived from Twycross a few weeks ago. She has settled well and is already intergreted with the male. Although she is thought to be too old to breed.

Male chimp/s will come once the fence can be re-done. Should be within the next year or two. No individuals sourced yet though.

Off show quarentine area under construction at prestent near Monkey Tails. It will be used to house some new Spider Monkey and Macaques which will arrive from oversea's towards the end of this year or early 2011.

Asian Small Clawed Otters shoud be back in the original exibit very soon if they haven't already been moved.

Do you know what the purpose of this move was? Twycross list 1.1 Babirusa, so presumably this leaves Twycross with 1.0? Aside from South Lakes and Chester, I don't believe there are any female Babirusa left in the UK of breeding age. So I'm confused as to why the move between Twycross and Dudley was done, unless Dudley's male shows more interest in mating and there is a slim chance of a resulting pregancy.

Dudley are having a really bad run with deaths lately, there will be no animals to see soon if this carries on.
