Hi Guys,

Sorry to ask a question that may have already been answered elsewhere but is the Male Giraffe at Dudley a pure rothschild/reticulated? Unsure of which subspecies he is! And will the two new females be pure?

Hi Guys,

He`s a Rothschilds.

Jordan-12 he arrived on the 8th April 2010 he's 9 years old and yes he did come from South Lakes.
Will try and find out where the 2 females are coming from on next visit

Apparently a collection in Holland had been contacted about supplying Dudley with 0:2 Rothschild Giraffe

Unsure on the arrival date but on last visit to Dudley they had fenced off part of the indoor house
Will be visiting next week so will try and find out for you

Cheers, mate! @Nisha posted that they are supposed to come out of Holland (not a lot of choices there ...). Look forward to your update though (as does this giraffe partitioning at Dudley).

Happy New Year too ...!

K.B.

New update

Orangutans - Thier was a litle mix up in the last bit of info as it was not Benji but the other male that was ill but alls well as he is on the mend now and looking a little livier then my last visit

Sumatran Tigers - A new breeding pair will be at the zoo before easter 2011 they are hoping they will be settled for the Easter Holidays.

Snow Leopard - Again the same as the Tigers they hope he will be settled and on Display by Easter 2011.

Giraffes - 2 New females have been sorted and hopefully will arrive before Easter and again settled by the Holiday period.

Camels - The housing area is starting to come on now after the bad weather had slowed the work down a new entrance gate to the Adventure Area is now in place, so I think it will not be long before they cut the play area in half so as to allow the grass to grow on the outside enclosure for the camels

Phase 2 - Orangutan house refurbishment as been put back due to bad weather and the Camel Enclosure construction.

Reptile House - The refurbishment of the display areas is now under way (I would rather see a new Reptile House then have this one refurbished).

Gibbons - Mom and baby are doing very well as both were outside today (photograph in gallery)

Pheasants - even more new Pheasants on site in the old avairy by the ballroom they now have a breeding pair of Reeve's and a pair of Golden Pheasants.

Treble pit area - This area of the zoo is now virtually empty and a notice about Sarah sends shivers down your spine.

White Faced Scops Owl - It was the first time today that I have seen the pair out in the enclosure together

Parma Wallabies - There was one young in the enclosure today and I am sure that there was at least one more in a mothers pouch.

Lions - Thier are rumours that at least one of the females is pregnant was unable to confirm with the keepers today but I have seen some photographs of the females within the last week and the one does look a little swollen in the right area

Did ask about other new arrivals and was just told there are things happening but unable to say at the moment, but don't be surprised to see more Lemur Species at the zoo shortly.

Just got back from a visit today snd csn report thst thier has not been much happening on the arrivals point since my last visit

Parma Wallaby - thier is a second young one in the enclosure now so he/she can't be to old

Tigers - to arrive before Easter (will try and get a definite date next time)

Giraffes - 2 dates have been said but will get definite one next time (Hiring of the vehicle being the problem)

Snow Leopard - will be arriving soon and could well be here by end of the month

Reptile House - they have nearly completed the refurbishment and have made the Indian Monitors display twice as big and moved one or two of the other reptiles around to bigger or smaller displays

Camel Paddock & Enclosure - This is coming on well now and it looks like they will have a fairly large paddock they hope to have the camels in the zoo by the end of Febuary or the first week of March

Laurel - (Macaque) after her accident last year she now seems very comfortable with the injury and looks great out in the enclosure, she was out today actually climbing haven't sen her do that for ages

Also by any chance do any of you have any Old Photographs of the zoo if so please p/m me

Makari will be at the zoo for about 6 months or untill the arrival of a breeding pair of Sumatran Tigers
Makari is not a breeding cat in the future or in the past according to WHF (who replied to my e-mail with speed and much information) is classed as a Hybrid by the EEP (not required for breeding programme) studbook.

Makari Was Born at Linton Zoo on 19th April 2006 where he was Parent Reared and came to WHF when he was approx 18 months old; he has been here permanently until the move to Dudley.

Thats interesting, is it just a loan, or is he going elsewhere after Dudley? Hard to tell from the wording

I have watched all the Linton cubs grow up so must try and visit Dudley before he is off again :D

Did WHF ever breed from him? I thought that was the original plan when they took him, obviously before his and Anouska's 'problem' was found out.

The e-mail I have from WHF state that they never bred from him in the past or intend to breed from him in the future, they would not say about any further loans or moves for him or any other animal in there collections
I have heard that the pair of sumatrans are due in round about late Aug or early Sept if everything goes alright.

EDIT

For those who do not know he was bred by the pair Deja & Mirka and born April 19th 2006 at Linton Zoo and moved to WHF 31st Oct 2007 he has stayed with WHF ever since and this is his first transfer since arriving.

Only just heard about Sarah, very sad news. does any body know what she died of?
Just to say i love Dudley zoo and it seems that every time i visit it gets better and better with new additions all the time.
I've been visiting since i was born and it has been a huge part of my life since then, infact i proposed to my girlfriend the other day. The zoo is a huge part of my life and hopefully always will be.

They held a post mortum on Sarah and it concluded that she died of cancer of the spleen and lymph nodes.
She was a beautiful animal and is sadly missed by all at the zoo.

Some unfortunate news about Maargash the Snow Leopard (coming to Dudley from Banham in near future). According to Banham's Facebook page he's currently undergoing treatment for a Liver infection and a subsiquent infection on the wound from his operation. He is said to be making a gradual recovery though and all being well should be moving to Dudley towards the end of the Summer

Thought I'd start a new thread for 2011.

Latest news,
the otters are finally in the new outside enclosure (their old enclosure in Monkey Tails is empty and the water in the pool drained out),

work is going on in the old polar pit, I was told that Inca the bear is moving into there and baboons are moving into Inca's pit, she's a really old girl now so I hope the move isn't too stressful for her.

The new camel enclosure is moving on at a pace, and they will be in their new home by Easter.

As far as I'm aware, the bear still makes good use of the enclosure, I think moving her to a pit is not the way I'd like to see her end her days. I don't understand why it is necessary for Dudley zoo to acquire a group of baboons to exhibit in her enclosure while she is still alive.
