Pure speculation from me here just for once but could it be the group of baboons from Edinburgh that have got to move for a large sleeping alot of the time Black and White animal!!

Someone else on here mentioned the baboons had already been moved elsewhere in Edinburgh zoo.
I don't think the bear enclosure makes a particularly good primate exhibit, they tried it with sulawesi macaques for a while, now these are housed in an open air exhibit in another part of the zoo, I just don't see what filling a very old enclosure, that suited an elderly bear, and which doesn't have particularly spacious indoor quarters, with primate, will do for Dudley.

The Polar bear pit is to be used for a short period of time to house Inca while they do work on her own indoor enclosure to make it more acceptable to house a breeding pair of bears
I was under the impression that a small group of baboons were to be housed else where on the grounds.
Sad news from the zoo on my last visit I had it confirmed that the oldest of the Bush Dogs had passed away during the very cold weather earlier this year.
They are down to just 2 dogs now, also speculation is growing that the male Giraffe will shortly be moved unless they can bring in 2 females from abroad.
The Old Avairy by the Sea Lions is now home to a pair of Scarlet Macaws, they have moved the Reeves Pheasants that were there in with the Waldrapps by the Otters.
2 new Common Rheas are now in with the Guanaco in the Old Bear Ravine, Golden Pheasants have moved from the Old Avairy to the avairy that holds the White faced scops owls, Lady Amethsyne Pheasants are now in the Monkey Tails walk through as well as being in the Avairy by the Otters.

Will they be wanting Asiatic black bears again, or will it just be whatever species they can get a pair of?

Definatly Asiatic Black Bears but they do have plan to introduce a second species at a later date

I have had an e-mail from someone who visited the zoo today and she was told that Inca will not be moved for any reason the indoor quarters will be modified while she is hibernating in her little outdoor hollow.
The Baboons project was a on going project like the Camels, Breeding pair of Bears, Male Snow Leopard, Breeding pair of Tigers, Bush Dogs, Female African Wild Dogs, Orangutan House Phase 2 and future breeding Rothchild Giraffes.
Yogi (Red Panda Cub) will be leaving shortly destination not known at present also a male Capybara to leave the collection along with the 2 Emporer Geese
If this is the case then we will just have to wait and see what comes first.

She was out and about on my last visit too but others have said that she was in her little hollow.
Never mind it's the alterations I am looking forward too if they ever come off as we know this zoo as a very good habit of saying one thing and doing something completely different or in some cases nothing at all.
I read in the local paper they have put in for a grant from the lottery to help start the refurbishment of all the tecton buildings and the sea lion pools again I wait with not much hope

I thought the tectons had been put on a world heritage site which was going to help with the upkeep? And putting in for a grant doesn't guarantee anything.
Adrian, just to clarify, baboons are coming in but you don't know where to? The bear (Inca) is definitely not moving? I'm a bit confused. And do you know what enclosures they plan to build for 2012?

Putting a building or a site on the World Heritage list does not make it safe you still have to up keep it, in the same way as the buildings are under the protection of the English Heritage organisation for quite a few years now and look at the state they have let them get into thats all I will say on that as it's a pet subject of mine.
The enclosures and buildings are those that have been on the plans for ages but have had no funding to upgrade as yet.
I have recieved 4 e-mails 1 saying she is moving and 3 saying shes not moving so will have to find out in person Saturday.
I would normally e-mail a zoo to ask questions but doing this at Dudley will get the regular no reply from the zoo

Can I ask where you get your information from then Adrian? (If you don't wish to say then that's fine) but if the zoo doesn't reply to your e mails then how do you find out all the moves and developments? You obviously know a lot of people that visit the zoo but are their sources reliable?
How do other people fare on here? Do you find your local zoos to be helpful or cagey with their plans?

Most of the information comes from the local news papers and is also common knowledge around Dudley. I also drink with someone who works there, and visit about once a month these days usally on a Saturday when most of the heads of departments are about.
Other zoos I e-mail with questions are usually very help full and I must say the best 2 to give information about thier collections are World Heritage Foundation and Twycross they regulary reply within 24 hours soem others take upto a week to reply but Dudley zoo NEVER!

Firstly they only have the male Giraffe at present but 2 hybred females to arrive before Easter (These are not for breeding purposes but just for company for the maleuntill 3 pure bred Rothchilds arrive in 2 years time) this is down to the stud book holder and not the zoo
Secondly it would not surprise me to find that they are now going to strengthen the outside wall so as to have a new Male brought in as work was going on to the back of the wall last time I was there but no one would comment.
Thirdly thier are to be a new breeding pair at the zoo in late October or early November this year. Makari the Amur Tiger is on loan until september or untill they have the Sumatrans on site (this is according to e-mail recieved from whf)
will be going up again in 3 weeks time on 24 or 25th April so any photographs or questions will try and get answers for you.

Few quick answers
1) 2 hybrid females to arrive from Banham in the next few weeks,they will stay until the zoo can get 2 Pure Baringos from 2 zoo`s in the Czech Republic!
2) None that I heard today!
3) The current Amur with leave when Adrian1963 said and will be replaced by 2 Sumatrans that will eventually form a new breeding pair all being well,if the circumstances of 1 doesn`t impare it from breeding!

Thanks for the answers guys! I too will be visiting around the 20th of April. Great to hear about the tigers and the giraffes! Hopefully the zoo can find the funds to update the chimpanzee fence and bring in some breeding males!!

Aren't the Dudley chimps all hybrids which are being phased out in EAZA collections?
