Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoological Gardens in 2014

Spent a couple of hours at the zoo today, lots of work is still being done. There are brand new information signs all over the zoo, and work is being done on the old cassowary exhibit to make it ready for the Stanley cranes, all the old fencing it being ripped out and the shrubs in it have been cut down and cleared away.

I'll upload a picture of the crane exhibit and an example of the new sign in a little while.

Both the giraffe cows are looking very round indeed and all three young howlers look to be doing well.

The reptiles house is starting to fill up but still looks pretty sparse.
 
Ring tailed lemurs

The ring-tailed lemur twins born last November in the small primate house have been sexed and are both male.

The high winds on Friday night blew a roof panel off the reptile house. The panel was above a vivarium containing a West African dwarf crocodile but, fortunately, spot heaters within the vivarium ensured that temperatures didn't fall.

Another news article mentions renovation work starting on some of the tectons including bear ravine.

The article that mentioned renovation of the tectons appears to have been removed from the Zoo's news page. It focussed on a local youngster who had been given the opportunity to work on the renovation as part of his apprenticeship scheme at a local college - the article mentioned the renovation work planned for 2014 which (from memory) was bear ravine, the shop, entrance and one of the kiosks.
 
Lesser Hedgehog Tenrecs (Echinops telfairi) to be exact :)
 
Visited on Sunday (23rd) and noticed a couple of changes but no amazing pieces of news to report.

There are two empty spaces in the Discovery Centre where animal skulls used to be kept, I guess this is where the tenrecs will be housed.

The Goeldi's monkeys have all been removed from Monkey Tails along with 2.0 saki monkeys so it now consists of all the squirrel monkey group and 1.1 white-faced saki. Also the pool is being refilled so they can move the carp into there whilst doing maintenance on the current pools.

One of the white-throated monitors has passed away.

Only saw three species of lemur in the walk-thrugh, black, ring-tailed and black and white ruffed. This was during a feed so don't know where the other species are now?

And finally, heard a keeper telling a couple that the Monkey Tails building used to be the tropical bird house... Which I'm certain is wrong as that's the building overlooking the lion enclosure. Oops! :p

About ten or so years ago the Monkey Tails building was a desiccated greenhouse with a handful of birds in it -it didn't seem that tropical but it was technically a "bird house". Maybe that counts?

You are right that the building overlooking the Lions was a bird house for many years (I believe, possibly, from the zoos inception).

I think there were a pair of red ruffed lemur in the small primate house (behind the discovery centre) when I last visited towards the end of January.

The round building overlooking the lion enclosure was a tropical bird house for many years - certainly during the 1960s and 70s and probably for some years before that. However, as Shorts said, Monkey Tails also used to have birds in before it became Monkey Tails. Certainly there were birds in it in the mid 1990s - I can't remember what the building was called at that time.

Well I do remember birds in there but I also recall that originally it was more butterflies and fish rather than birds. I can't ever recall it being known as a bird house even though there were a few birds in it.
I do understand the confusion a bit more now that someone else has explained it though. :)

Are you sure the collared lemurs were not just inside? They don't seem as bold as the others and mostly stay inside or near their house.

I'm not certain but it was a mass feeding frenzy and whenever this has happened before then every lemur has come out to eat. The keeper in charge was quite busy so I didn't get a chance to ask.
 
I overheard that both cows were Rothschild/Masai hybrids, while the bull was a pure Rothschild but I can't confirm that.

Can anyone else?

What I can confirm already is that both females are as hybrid as the driven snow is pure ...!
