Short translation :

Nice news from Duisburg. A colobus was born. It's the 42nd birth of this species at Duisburg which keeps the species since 1977 and at the moment its the only zoo in Germany with this species.
The small Eueopean population is kept also at a few Austrian, Czech and English zoos. Totaly 38 animals live in Europe and the EEP is coordinated by Duisburg. Almost a quarter of the European population is kept at Duisburg.
Congratulations to Duisburg Zoo for this nice breeding-succes.
 
To be precise, the species in question is King Colobus (Colobus polykomos):)

Proud mid-term evaluation for breeding the Pygmy hippo at Duisburg. In the last 40 years 25 young have been born. Duisburg started keeping the species in 1974.
The zoo has produced a little article about the Pygmy hippos ---> link.

( BTW don't you have some kind of translation-app on your computer / laptop / phone ? )

Whether someone has or doesn't have a translation app doesn't really matter as Zoochat is an international forum with English as language of communication and therefore we expect all messages to be in English, or if they are quotes/taken from another article to be accompanied with an English translation, that is the task for the poster not for the readers. Everybody is off course allowed to link to foreign language articles, as long as this is accompanied by an English summary of what it refers to. People who are really interested can off course google translate the original article themselves (but in my personal experience these translation apps are rather bad...)

I had this thought earlier this morning as well. I get very nervous when clicking on it! Not sure if going to Germany anytime soon is even feasible, but that dolphin is a good portion of the reasons I want to go...

Me too. Duisburg is one of only a few zoos I haven't visited whose news thread I often check in case the dolphin has died and as such has removed my main reason to visit. Every year I consider going to Duisburg, but I always end up prioritizing going to other places in Europe for various other sights. (Have no idea if the same will happen this year as I'm not sure how much travelling I can afford).

Better hurry up then. Baby is getting old. I choosed Duisburg for 2017 summer because of that.

I should most definitely hurry, but my problem is that I don't plan my travels solely around zoos. I also want to do stuff like walking around old city centres with cobbled streets, visit big museums, go for hikes in remote nature etc. The Duisburg area doesn't seem to have too much of that compared to other parts of Europe (or Germany for that sake). I'm not sure if I can persuade my wallet to do an overnight trip solely to see a river dolphin... :p

Maybe someone in here could open my eyes to other worthwhile sights in the Duisburg area?

Amsterdam is less then 2 hours away with a direct train, as are historical cities like Aachen, Cologne, Muenster etc as is a for western European standards a very empty nature area on the Belgian-German border: les Hautes Fagnes & Eiffel just south of Aachen. So plenty of options there

If you like smaller animals, overall fishes and also lizards and frogs, then maybe you want visit the biggest pet shop in the world, Zoo Zajac that is in Duisburg. It have usually more species than a medium zoo (just don't expect too much in warm blooded animals).
