Zoo Duisburg Duisburg Zoo news

Yes, your right @Kifaru Bwana!

Duisburg (1,2,1), Hannover (0,1) and Planckendael (0,2) are keeping the mainland species, while Pairi Daiza, Copenhagen (breeding) and Budapest (breeding) are keeping the subspecies from Tasmania.

I see some very cute Spectacled Bear cub photos on my flickr; has there been a recent birth?
Actually, are there 2 of them?!

Huanka & Wurf ?

Yes Huanka has two cubs. For the moment they are mostly in thier birthcave and just for a few minutes a day to see in the small speceled bear enclosuere to see, without recent times.

As I learned today, on 28 August 2018 Makar, the 2 years old male Tiger, was unexpectedly to the zoo visitors from the Duisburg Zoo handed over to the Zoo Zamosc in Poland.
Take care, Makar!

Five Banded mongooses was born in Duisburg Zoo in the middle of August.

As I learned yesterday, there are no more Mandrill in the Zoo.
There ist just a sign at their old enclosure.
I hope the Zoo found a good new home for Ernst (photo) and his family.

Hopefully they use the now former mandrill exhibit to give other species in the Äquatorium more space - because there's quite a few in that building in need of that. Although only a complete overhaul and a huge renovation will be enough to bring that whole house into the 21st century.

I'd almost rather see them demolish the grotto, give the seal exhibit a major overhaul and expand it onto the site of the grotto. The harbor seals arguably live in poorer conditions than the Äquatorium primates. Not to say that the Äquatorium shouldn't be given a much-needed renovation sooner or later.

Side note: Even though I won't be too late to see Baby the river dolphin, having visited Duisburg this summer, my heart still skips a beat every time there's a new post in this thread. :P

I only now realized I was kinda wrong in my previous post regarding the Äquatorium. I kinda forgot the mandrills no longer lived there, but occupied the former polar bear, later on fur seal grotto. I'm sorry for that.

That said, I think my comment on the Äquatorium needing a major overhaul still stands - and I still think doing something about that building (even in phases if necessary) should be a priority for the Duisburg Zoo.

@Hvedekorn is right that the seals are also in substantial need of a new exhibit and arguably the now vacated location could also work for that.

We will have to see what the zoo does. But in any case I hope they use the location to improve conditions for their current animal residents rather than bring in anything new.
