Zoo Duisburg Duisburg Zoo news

When I visited Duisburg in 1985, I had read that it had a big collection of marsupials. It had 2 species: red and grey kangaroos. I'm glad it has more now.

I saw 4 species of whales in 1985: bottle-nosed and Commerson's dolphins, belugas and boutu

All four where still there when I visited the zoo for the first time. That must have been around 2003/2004.
Glad that is no longer the case though. The enclosures for the boto (pre Rio Negro) and beluga/Commersons dolphin were shamefully terrible.

Good to see another cool Australian species in Duisburg. It surely has one of the best Australian sections/collections in Europe, along with Prague, Pairi Daiza and Stuttgart.
 
A new giant otter has joined the existing male group at Zoo Duisburg. Male Lobo has joined Maldito and Guapo. The three animals were introduced to each other over several days, and are now well accustomed to each other and all live together. Zoo Duisburg thus provides the EEP with a place to keep animals for which there is currently no suitable partner. Should this change, one of the males will move to another zoo to form a new breeding pair. It is already clear that this will happen to Lobo in the future.

In January a female Reeves' muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) was born.

The zoo is going to invest 5,8 million euro in the renovation and expansion of the California sea lion enclosure. The enclosure will have an area of over 1,000 m², parts of the water area will be 3 meters deep and will be filled with 1.3 million liters of purely biologically treated salt water.

Hey, I'm going to visit Duisburg zoo this weekend. Is this a good moment for a visit? If so what is the best route in the zoo to walk, so I don't miss many species.

I visited Duisburg last week, manatees are always cool to see and i would recommend trying to find the agile wallaby which are mixed with swamp wallaby and wallaroos (no luck with that from my visit however). There are also wombats, echidnas, and bustards which are all great species to have. I don't know about gender disparity but in regards to sex ratios, the quote below suggests a slight bias towards males.
