An Orangutan has been shot dead and a second caught after being darted following an incident this evening. The pair escaped through a skylight in the exhibit before the 1st individual left the zoo grounds. He/she was then shot due to the falling darkness and the risk to the public

The second Orangutan is now secure and a statement will be issued by the zoo tomorrow morning

Horrible story. Wouldn't it have been possible to dart the poor Orang rather than shoot him/her. I don't understand German so there may have been a reason in the story, but from where the Orang house is within the zoo I'd imagine he/she would have gone into the woodland at the back of the zoo so not near to homes.
 
That option was no longer available as the male was already in the process of scaling the fence onto the Motorway … The zoo staff with a fire-arm licence were thus forced to intervene. Everyone involved along with the entire Zoo Team at Duisburg Zoo are in shock at this moment about the most deplorable loss of a very valuable breeding animal.
 
I fully understand now, had he gone the other way into the woods behind and up a tree he may well have survived, but going onto the motorway would have meant the end of him. Such a tragic story.
 
Today in the early morning, bottlenose dolphin"Daisy"gave birth to a healthy calf and took good care for it. Another female,"Daisy"is also high pregnant.
 
Duisburg received 5,0 African Hunting Dogs (Brothers) from Rome to Keep the Wild dog enclosure alive.

There is also a new monkey species at the Äquatorium, also from Rome...

Two White-crowned mangabeys are now on Display and enrich the excellent monkey collection, including Gorilla, bornean Orangutan, Agile Gibbon, Northern White-cheaked gibbon, Siamang, Wanderoo, Golden Lion tamarin, king colobus, De Brazza´s monkey, White-nosed guenon, Roloway guenon, etc.
 
Last year a Harbour seal was born at Duisburg for the first tie in 4 years. Also this year the zoo was succesfull and first time mother Babsi gave birth to a healthy young. Father of the young is the end of last year died male Pinocchio which was himself in 1984 the first seal born at Duisburg.
