Several babies have been born at the center recently and were announced for Baby Week! 0.1 Coquerel’s Sifaka named Cornelia was born on February 20th. 1.0 Crowned Lemur named Hapi was born on June 2nd to parents Zuberi and Seshat. 0.1 Red-ruffed Lemur named Hoku was born on May 28th to first time parents, Afo and Mae. Lastly, twin mouse lemur twins named Azalea and Tiger Lily were born recently to mom, Agnus.

Other 2022 News:

On January 25th, the center announced that a (0.1) aye-aye named Endora passed away on August 26th, 2021, at the age of 37. She was the oldest aye-aye ever maintained in human care.

On February 18th, it was announced that (3.0) grey mouse lemurs named Cedar, Cholula, and Speedwell were transferred to the North Carolina Zoo in North Carolina.

On May 3rd, the center announced that (2.0) ring-tailed lemurs named Mr. Popper and Gatsby were born in April.

On June 2nd, the center announced that (0.2) blue-eyed black lemurs named Kidman and Poots are now on exhibit in the forest enclosure for the first time.

*Other misc. news; A new digital radiography X-ray machine was bought on March 8th, and they received a perfect score from an AZA inspection, making them only the 5th facility to receive a perfect score.

A female Coquerel's sifaka was born March 12:

INFANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Meet Minerva! - Duke Lemur Center

On March 12, 2023, experienced Coquerel's sifaka mom Pompeia gave birth to a healthy 89g female infant! Minerva gets her name from the Roman goddess of wisdom and justice, also known to the Ancient Greeks as Athena.

Minerva’s father, Gordian, unfortunately passed away at the end of 2022, but Minerva has a lively family group in mom Pompeia and older sister Cornelia.

On June 16th, the center announced that (0.0.2) black-and-white ruffed lemurs named Kepler and Spitzer on May 7th. Also, the zoo announced they recently acquired a (1.0) black-and-white ruffed lemur named Bruno from the ABQ BioPark Zoo in New Mexico.

On July 18th, it was announced that the center transferred a (1.0) Coquerel's sifaka to the Maryland Zoo in Maryland.

An update on the Blue-eyed Black Lemurs that were imported from Madagascar in 2017. The pair's first offspring - female Ranomasina - has now been introduced to male from the existing population in the hopes to broaden this valuable genetic line for the North American population - reported on their FB page.
This is fantastic news about the blue-eyed black lemur, glad there's some hope for that species here.

Albus, parents Rodelinda and Johann, and older sister Egeria are now a family of four living together here at the DLC.

Like his older sister Egeria, who was named for a Roman consort, Albus gets his name from Ancient Rome. Albus, Latin for “white,” was a common Roman surname and the moniker for a Roman port city (Portus Albus, or “White Harbor”).
