I don't mean to sound condescending, but I must ask why did you bring it up in the first place.

@Jonfla is describing the zoo’s approach to member interaction at this time - that happens to include unspecified ‘updates.’ It’s not as if they have teased everyone with leading statements eg ‘big animal news coming soon.’

Thanks, I was surprised by the call and thought it was going the extra mile to secure ongoing membership support and funding. Sorry if it was of no interest to some but hey, we all have different perspectives.

As a long time member Durrell proactively called me today, offering me updates, asking when we might return to Jersey, and offering a personal experience when we do.
Obviously hurting from lack of tourists, but an innovative approach to keep members onside .
I was discussing this with Mr Gigit this morning and we agreed that it was wonderfully typical of Jersey and something few other zoos would do. Can't wait to go back there ourselves.

Yes, I thought it was a "nice" touch. Glad you got what I was trying to convey. :)

Great news - the zoo has announced on FB that they've raised the funds needed to build a brand new state-of-the-art indoor gorilla enclosure. Worth checking out for the photo of Badongo, Bahasha and little Amari.
Yes but sort of good news/bad news.
Great for long needed new indoor enclosure, but I then guess this means the new long proposed larger outdoor enclosure will not be going ahead. It had been proposed in the field on the other side of the hedge from existing.

Thanks @Gigit ! Somehow I thought there would be more of them.
Though they have bred a lot of gorillas in the past, it is a very small group at present. Only female Bahasha currently has a baby and she has never had a succesful birth before. H/Kahilli is/was the main breeding female(and the only one of the three born there) but has not had a successful birth since Indigo about eight years ago, and he has since moved onto Belgium. The third female Kishka is older and probably past breeding.

The news about the house is good as a new indoor house is badly needed, as the existing one is small. It might also allow them to expand the group in the future.

Thank you for sharing that information @Pertinax, very interesting.

Judging by the size of groups held at other zoos it does seem quite a small group.

I've only seen the house in pictures and it didn't seem too bad to me (the outdoor enclosure looks superb too) but then again I don't really know very much about gorillas or their needs in captivity.

Yes, these days it counts as a very small group, particularly as they bred a number in the past when births were still unusual. Actually they have never had more than around seven or eight, even back then. The house is okay but it is small.

I think that the gorillas like the spectacled bear and orangutangs are one of the iconic and historic Jersey animals and seem to be a big draw for the visitors so its great that they continue to maintain a small group.

I still think that they could do with some Roloway guenons though.

A 6 part TV series begins on Saturday 9 October on Channel 5 at 10.30am. "Talking Animals: Tales from the Zoo" is obviously aimed at children but probably worth a look for views of the zoo.

This is worth watching. It's by no means 100% 'Johnny Morris' and the first episode featured preparations for gorilla Indigo's departure for Pairi Daiza in March 2019, and the arrival and settling in of flamingos from Chester.

The lesser night geckos, Bojer's skinks and Bouton's skinks rescued from an oil spill in Mauritius in 2020 have all bred successfully. The thirty lesser night geckos have had fifty offspring, the thirty Bojer's skinks have had forty-seven offspring and the six Bouton's skinks have had four young.

@Gigit, I assume you saw the orang birth on this week's episode.
