A rather dramatic take on this announcement?Yet another nail in Jersey Zoo’s coffin
Sensible part of my brain is wondering about tapir and buffy-headed capuchin.Giant Otter? Woolley Monkeys? Spider Monkeys?
Well, no. A large charismatic endangered species held there almost since the beginning, with a lot of success. The zoo continues to get less inspiringA rather dramatic take on this announcement?
With plans for larger indoor gorilla accommodation and an ambitious new reptile & amphibian house well underway? I would hardly describe this as the zoo getting less inspiring.Well, no. I could see the two EEP candidate capuchin species (blond capuchin and Ka’apor capuchin) as a more feasible option than muiqui. The 'but what if.....' part of my brain would love southern muriqui.
Not really an adequate replacement for the bears though! Now that I think about it, Colchester Zoo have, I think, three buffy-headed capuchins in one of the old bear dens, with the signage specifically saying they are moving to a new zoo. They could definitely be an option.
Baird's Tapir? :hopeful:Sensible part of my brain is wondering about tapir and buffy-headed capuchin.
Not if it's Atlantic Forest-related!Baird's Tapir? :hopeful:
This is a big surprise. They've had Spectacled Bears almost since the inception of the Zoo when GD acquired the male 'Pedro' who was a singleton for many years until Brookfield(?) in the USA sent them a female. I think her name was Petronella. Subsequently they bred quite a lot of cubs from follow- up pairs including Spencer, the male from Whipsnade who replaced Pedro, and then later Wolfgang and Barbara. I lost track of the names after them.. It has always been a signature species for the park, not least since they featured in the 'First Impressions' building at the entrance to the park. Maybe they now feel it simply doesn't offer them enough space but its strange to see them go, while Guernsey Goats (to the naysayers, yes I know they are a local and 'rare' domestic breed) arrive. Sign of the times but a sad day nonetheless.Well, no. A large charismatic endangered species held there almost since the beginning, with a lot of success. The zoo continues to get less inspiring
My best guess would be Chui stereotypes a lot in the moat, which isn’t a good look as the first animal you see when visiting the zoo. Bahia is also on contraception as the stud book don’t want to breed the pair so perhaps the two new species will offer more from a breeding aspect. (Obviously we had the happy little accident that was Raymi)
A six-year-old female Coppery Titi has arrived from Banham Zoo. The female has successfully been paired with their resident male. The pair will be free-ranging during the summer but are currently living in an enclosure on the edge of Tamarin Woods - reported on social media.
I have been waiting to see if anyone responds to this , it often seems to be me who is negative and I really don't want to be. This is all very admirable, but recent reports on the zoo where it all started have been far from positive and this doesn't deflect from that so this won't get a like from me unless it is accompanied by improvement to the zoo ( one I currently won't make the effort to visit). Sits back and waits for abuse from Durrell worshippers .......Jersey have secured a lease for an 18,500-acre estate in Perthshire, Scotland to commence a rewilding project.
