Thought as much, that is fantastic news! I am aware collection has previously done conservation work with native White-clawed Crayfish (something that Bristol participated in as well), European Wildcats and others, so I hope they can continue some of the fantastic conservation work carried out at the Clifton site with these incredible, Critically Endangered bats.

It is a shame that both Durrell and Northumberland are very hard to get to from where I reside, and it is entirely possible that I will never make it to either to see their bats. I am very grateful to have admired them at Bristol on several occasions while I had the chance!

EDIT: Just looked at Northumberland County's map and there is a building besides the Capybaras

In any event there were none in the UK for about thirty years from the end of the 60's through to when Edinburgh got them.

I also remember geladas in London Zoo's old Monkey House (built 1927).

However its not accurate to say there were none in the UK "for about thirty years from the end of the 60s....". London Zoo definitely acquired gelada in the early 1970s for the newly opened Sobell Pavilions.

They are not by the Capybara. That new for 21 on the map is actually the Capybara and Tapir house.

Left of the Prairie dogs, behind the Parrot walkthrough is the building where they are.

I don't really remember them in the Sobells but am sure you are correct. Was it the same pair from the old Monkey House that transferred there perhaps?

I saw geladas there. I also saw my first douc langur in the Sobell Pavilions

Yes, thinking back I sort of remember them, possibly in one of the smaller cages that is still present at the rear of the building that holds the Mangabeys? Its possible those were the ones that came from Jersey, rather than the older pair in the previous Monkey House. I remember the Doucs also, as well as groups of Mandrill, Sooty Mangabey, Pigtailed macaque among others- the idea was to have a widely representative display of Primates and for a time, it was.

According to the ZSL Annual Report for 1973 London Zoo acquired four gelada that year.

The Annual Report states that "Groups of black spider monkeys and gelada baboons were added to the collection as part of the process of presenting in the Sobell Pavilions the broadest picture of the primate world....."

The above quote would imply that there were no gelada in the Sobell Pavilions until this new group were acquired. Consequently it seems unlikely that the gelada we both remember in the old Monkey House were transferred to the Sobell Pavilions.

I saw my first douc langur in the Sobell Pavilions too. London Zoo acquired two doucs in 1972.

A summary of Jersey Zoo's achievements this year. Notably, a total of three Black Lion Tamarins were born in 2022 and six Madagascar Big-headed Turtles hatched in the reptile house which is apparently a first for Durrell. To summarise, new species for 2022 have included Gelada, Linne's Two-toed Sloth, Aardvark and Northern White-cheeked Gibbon. It was also one of their most successful years breeding Livingstone's Fruit Bats. Funds will continue to be raised for the new tropical house into the new year.

 
A six-year-old female Coppery Titi has arrived from Banham Zoo. The female has successfully been paired with their resident male. The pair will be free-ranging during the summer but are currently living in an enclosure on the edge of Tamarin Woods - reported on social media.
