And not a concrete tree in sight! It seems they are back on track foe putting g the needs of the animal first, as well as considering the keepers needs to look after the animals. Really great news and much better they've taken time with plans, rather than rushing and having animals housed in a stair well!

Let's hope future enclosures follow what looks like a thorough planning process for a state of the art facility! It will of course magnify how inappropriate the sloth area is by comparison but hopefully they will do something about that soon

The artist impression of the interior seems to show just the basic design Webbing, ropes, bark flooring etc mentioned in text are not featured.

Where in relation to the existing gorilla house is the new one going to be?

The published plans show that the new house will be built on the site of the warty pig enclosure, beside the existing gorilla house. It will be in the south eastern corner of the zoo. It will connect to the existing outdoor enclosure and there will be an additional outdoor yard with a mesh roof, but it seems to be off-show (if I have read the plans correctly).

Correct, I visited last year and they were building a new enclosure for the warty pigs behind the current gorilla house to make way for the new gorilla house. I believe secondary outside enclosures are a requirement for new gorilla builds to facilitate future breeding and imports of new gorillas, any required separation etc, which I imagine this offshow yard is for.

Sorry but haven't been there for a long time now and don't know where the Warty pig enclosure is. But I assume the new build is on the Manor side of the existing house, as from memory the other side slopes down on a bend.

I noticed the small offshow outdoor yard on the plan. Very useful for isolation purposes when necessary

The existing gorilla house is bottom right on the satellite view;

Google Maps

And I believe the picture is fairly recent (2024 at least) so shows some construction under way in the very South Easterly corner of the park.

Thanks but I'm still not clear where the new building is in relation to the old one.
Looking on Google maps I believe the blue is the old house and the red is the site of the new house.

It’s in the south east corner of the zoo, directly south of the current house. I believe the new house will connect directly to the existing outside habitat, and will not be built on footprint of the old one. I’m hoping to visit again before the end of the year so I’ll try to get some photographs.

Thanks. I get it now. I could see all the disturbed area so presumed that was the site for the new building. Now confirmed. It has to be adjacent to the existing house as otherwise the gorillas have nowhere to live until its finished. It also looks like it has taken a small section of the outside enclosure on the corner where I think there were glass viewing widows, but thats a small price to pay for a decent larger building for them.

Some photos would be much appreciated when you go again.
