ZOO Dvůr Králové Dvůr Králové

Local media reports the zoo negotiates with the town about new parking lot in front of new planned zoo entrance. This should be south of existing safari-part. Already this year, the zoo will start building visitors paths and a new bridge that will connect the existing zoo areal with the planned entrance. The article again discusses planned expansion of rhino outside exhibits and a new Cape buffalo + rhino safari pen, but doesnt mention exact year. I hope they start 2025 as well.

The zoo confirmed it received 50 wild-caught birds of 4 African species from Slovak animal rescue station in Velky Krtis late last year. They were part of the confiscated batch from illegal trade. The article mentions that among others Plzen and Zlin also agreed and accepted some birds. Slovak zoos took in 300-400 birds themselves. (distribution of confiscated birds to various Czech zoos is coordinated by Czech ministry upon request for help by Slovak officials).

  • Chestnut-bellied starling (Lamprotornis pulcher)
  • Rüppell's starling (Lamprotornis purpuroptera)
  • Long-tailed glossy starling (Lamprotornis caudatus)
  • Piapiac (Ptilostomus afer)
The birds are currently placed in Dvur Kralove´s quarantine and are nursed back to health. After they are cleared and stabilised, DNA tested for sex and paired, they will be offered to other interested zoos.

2 pairs of Piapiac now can be seen in outdoor aviaries of the Bird House

Yesterday, reticulated giraffe bull Paul arrived from zoo Jihlava. Paul was born in 2011 in Allwetterzoo Münster (Axel x Makena).

Dvur keeps two giraffe subspecies - Rotshilds and reticulated ones, in nice herds. Rotshilds breed well, but reticulated have not bred since over 10 years ago. First the coordinator put a temporary breed ban, and later, a newly acquired bull, could not get any cow pregnant for years. Lets pray Dvur elderly reticulated cows can get pregnant and birth safely calves after such long pause.

Black crakes (Zapornia flavirostra) living freely in the bird house have bred and produced 4 chicks. Keepers found out after a group of visitors caught a little black fluffy "ball" near glass screen of orang exhibit and brought it to a keeper. Parents and chicks were then trapped and moved bts. White-crowned robin-chats also bred in the hall and have 1 chick.

A group of 1.2 eastern putty-nosed monkeys arrived from Wroclaw zoo.

They joined 0.2 that were kept at Dvur already. The new male is 20 years old, new females are 35 and 37 years old - truly ancient. Dvur´s own females are a young one bred at Dvur in 2019 and a older one - the last surviving animal of Rotterdam group that arrived in 2015.
