ZOO Dvůr Králové Dvůr Králové

I am very sure that the "african" lions in Dvur were subspecies hybrids and not pure africans. Visitors don`t see the difference and the asians are probably allowed to breed, so I think it`s a good thing. Both for the zoo and for the asian lion population in Europe.

Yes they would like to breed them and be part of conservation effort. The two outgoing african males were born in some private circus and later confiscated for insufficient conditions. They arrived via Vienna. Borned in 1991 and 1994 respectively.

No info about incoming females on theit pages so far only that european coordinator is involved (which is obvious).

I think it is great from conservation standpoint and african image of Dvůr should not be a top priority. More asiatic lions in Europe and hopefully in Northern America too!

The SSP is designated to concentrate on pure-bred subspecific African lions. This is after the late 80's/early '90s debacle with hybrid African/Asiatic lions in zoos within and outside India.

The European EEP is designated though to take on at least one pure-bred subscpecific African lion race for a cooperative breeding programme. No choice as yet, Leipzig Zoo has a big say in this.

Could be that they'll get Katanga lions (panthera leo bleyenberghi), as those are what Leipzig already has (sadly inbred tho due to too few specimins :( ) I think they're also calld Angolan lions

Ok...the two previous males (wich looke like females) were unattractive for such a great zoo like Dvur (but I have to admit I like the idea they helped animals from bad conditions). Few years ago were Asian lion much more rare in european zoos but now they dont. In fact there are more facilities with Indian lions in Europe than with any other pure African lion subspecies. And also remember there is no place for Indian lions in India. No chance to bring them to nature in future. Gir reservation is in maximum capacity with lions, they try to transfer some lions to other reservations but no place for them (because of high population and scare from lions).
And as I remember well Dvur used to keep Berber lions once. What happened to them? Why they stopped breeding them?

Well, there are reservations in India and Pakistan who would have space for lions, but the politics are so complicated. And the gir-reservation won't give any other reservations lions... It's a bad constelation. Many lions have left Gir on their own, but i dont know if they survive 'outside'.

It is definitely a political (federally governed) issue that precludes lions from being transferred interstate from Gujarat to elsewhere. From a conservation point of view it is a valid and sensible option to set up satellite populations as an insurance against local extinction. The latter has been supported by many conservationists inside and outside India, even up to IUCN/WWF. However, it has not softened the stance of the Gujarat state government.

Gir Forest has recently been expanded, but the protected area suffers from human interference (eroding its protected status integrity), poaching (the official figures are way below the true figure - also a politically motivated cover up - as it would underline that Gir - as in Gujarat state government doing - Asiatic lion population is not well protected) and most importantly the protected area is too small to really conserve this taxon (it can never hold more than the current figure of 350-400 lions, whereas a safe population should have at least up from 2,500 individuals).

I wish that the BJP Gujarati government had been voted out in the last election as they are the principal proponent from the Gir Asiatic lion conservation programme not working (it is on a scale similar to the Indian tiger and - to a lesser extent also - Indian rhino). If ever a public inquiry were to be held a lot of heads would roll in the government as well as administration (the COF - Forestry Dept.). I personally feel this would be a cleansing exercise that would finally allow India to emerge as a true conservation minded nation (as Ghandi and Nehru really saw it) and drop all the bureacracy and political bagage ....

Lionesses on display. Those are Yenna and Yanna from Helsinki (* March 07' Helsinki).

Birth of golden lion tamarin twins.

I haven´t been to Dvur Kralove for some time, but I´ve seen pictures taken last weeks and then Kito was standing together with the two cows in the outside pen. He spends nights in his separate house, but I know keepers try to learn him to go into the main house so he can be in contact with the cows 24 hours a day, separated only by metal poles at night.

Hi

I'm planning a rail trip around Europe in April next year and will be taking in a few zoos I've never visited.

One will be Dvur Kralove, staying at the Safari Hotel, but I notice from an earlier post by Jana that some species are only on view from April to October.

Can anyone advise when in April they tend to make the change? I'd hate to arrange my trip and find I'd missed some species by a day.

Thanks

Jon

RE Satu: During my last visit at the summer end, I saw Satu together with the other female Zaneta and her half-grown son, but separated from the breeding male Elmar. Besar and Satu were playing a lot. Satu looked to be in a good condition and had her fun. But I haven´t met anybody to ask if she is maybe expecting.

RE Sommer season: They switch normally around 1th of May. But with a good wetter forecast, it can happen 1 or 2 weeks prior this date in some years. They make this decision just few days before, so I´m affraid you can´t plan with some definite datum.

There were two female black rhino calves born at the zoo last week. Father of both calves is bull Baringo 2 (imported last year from UK), mothers are Elba and Jessi (both were born in Dvur already). They will get their names sometime next spring.

Can somebody tell me what happened with slender-horned gazelle (Gazella leptoceros) Dvur Kralove? I am so sad, I remember them as a breeding group. According to zootierliste.de they are now just in Planckendael.

Their group was breeding regularly, but had also a high mortality. When the group diminished to the last 2,0 last year, they just gave up.
