ZOO Dvůr Králové Dvůr Králové

The zoo obtained a group of Lesser Flamingos. They will replace Caribbean flamingos that are beeing phased out. This is a part of the plan to keep only african species.

New species is Southern Bald Ibis - 5 birds.

How do you actually pronounce Dvůr Králové please? I like to be able to say things properly in my head when I read them.

You can try this site to listen to it: Výslovnosti slova Dvur

All special signs ů, á and é mean that it is a long wovel. ů = uuu
R is pronounced rolled.
Main accent of each Czech word is always on the first syllable. And then on each odd syllable.

Fantastic news - this means that a total of three collections have gone into the species this year; including, I just discovered, Exmoor Zoo.

Thank you, not too far from how I was saying it which I expected to be completely wrong!

Pelicans are breeding again, there are now 21 chicks of 4 species growing up. Zoo expects to have around 30 in total this winter again.

Interesting is a pair of african saddle-billed storks, that incubates their eggs. Because the eggshell is too thick, keepers failed in examination if they are viable or not. Now they can just wait.

Angolan guerezas have 1 fresh youngster. After re-organisation of the group last year (new male), it is the first one that survived.

The zoo plans to build some small exhibits this year - for Aldabran tortoises, mongooses and some african owl species.

Next year, a drive-through lion safari will be aded.

Dvur's Facebook is reporting that female, Borneon Orangutan, Satu and her son Dewi will move from Dvur to Bassin D´Arcachon, France later in the year. Dvur previously sent male, Besar to the same collection

Dewi is female ;)

Any news about the saddle-billed storks ?

No news. That means no chicks. Lets hope next season is better.

BTW
Dvur will send an official request to join EAZA again next month. Lets see what will be the answer from EAZA, and what type of membership will be offered to the zoo.

Jana, that justice may be done!

It would be outright ludicrous if it would take EAZA yonkers years to re-accredit Dvur Kralove Zoo. It is a zoo with excellent zoo keeper and curatorial / scientific / animal management staff and not in the league of some substandard zoos or those having never been a member of EAZA.

Without Dvur there would not have been an EAZA in many respects.

BTW: it might well be that Zoo Berlin / Berlin Tierpark may follow the same route after April 1st and thus having 2 other major players in the European zoo world re-enter EAZA.

2.0 (Barbary mix) lions will arrive from Olomouc shortly... Dvur will then become the 2nd European collection to house both Asian and African lions. The other being Parc de Felins (who house a none breeding Asiatic group)

The park is in the process of changing completely to African species focus.

I expect the Asiatic lions to go quite soon.

@Jana

Do you have any idea, what new african species the zoo plans to bring in to replace all non-african species, especially hoofstock ? I hope to see Giant Eland back in europe.

I´m sorry but I don´t know any planned new hoofstock species, apart from hippos. Dvur has only Arabian oryxes from non-african hoofstock, and I think they´ll stay. Dvur´s problem/target is to get new blood for already kept hoofstock species. Their valuable breeding work of decades has got discrupted since they left EAZA.

I guess that Western Giant Elands might appear in Europe soon, if only there is enough zoos interested in starting a new breeding program. The only problem is how to import them from Senegal´s captive herds, with all the vet red tape.

Dvur needs to re-stabilise its breeding groups of African hoofstock. But be sure to see some idiosyncratic and unusual African "lesser" mammal, bird and reptile species enter the collection. The policy to change over to full African wildlife park is in the full works.

I do believe some "exotics" may remain, like with the tigers et cetera. But the 95% majority will be totally African.

There has been a lot of exciting building work going on in the last few years and lately the Safari Look has been given a total make-over. The new director has a real good feel for visitor perceptions and facilities. Also, he champions the conservation ethic in situ very much both in the zoo and in range countries. BTW: he has been a parliamentary member and an advisor to the government on wildlife / zoo animal management!

As to EAZA membership: it is now a wait and see! Dvur has set some pre-conditions - I believe justly so - though.

If it all goes according to what was envisaged, be sure to see some exciting animal exchanges too ... before long!
