Eastern Europe's Best Zoos?????

I've visited the Budapest Zoo and found it to be quite interesting with a nice collection. They had a lot of construction going on there, so the future is good.

Does anyone on this board know -- what are the best zoos in Eastern Europe, besides Budapest? Has anyone visited the zoos in Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, any of the Baltic nations, Ukraine, or any of the other former Soviet states? I've heard that the Moscow Zoo has a huge collection of animals and that Russia has invested a good deal of money into this zoo, but are there any other good Russian zoos?

I'm just curious if any other zoos in Eastern Europe are at least as good as Budapest?

Vienna Zoo is one of best zoos and more to the East than some zoos in countries you mentioned.

I think Prague, Dvur Kralove and Poznan are very good.

I understand you are asking about Eastern Europe's Zoos, but have you visited Berlin Zoo in Germany, it is in my oninion the best zoo i have visited, and that includes San Diego, Bronx and many others, if you have not visited this fantastic park, i truly think you would like, based on your admiration for Omaha Zoo, a place i'm yet to visit, but looking foward to.

What do you mean, "fail"? Is Hungary considered part of "Central Europe"? I didn't know that -- I've always heard of it as "Eastern", probably because it was part of the communist "East Bloc".

Yes, I have been to Berlin (both zoos), and from the way you rated it on another thread, I totally agree with you. But I'm asking about the zoos of Eastern Europe -- where I don't know much about them.

Yes it is and using term Eastern Europe this way is insulting. Cold war point of view aka "Eastern Bloc" is what Russia wants and it is very dangerous.

That's new to me as well, and i live in Europe. Considering the countries ANyhuis is referring to with this thread (Hungaria, Poland, Czech Repulic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, perhaps even Belarus and Moldavia) and specifically not Germany, Austria or Switzerland i would say, based on Wikipedia, he used the right term. Pure geologically there also seems nothing wrong with the term eastern Europe.

Never knew the words eastern Europe would be considered insulting or even dangerous these days. Anyone else from "eastern European" countries that have the same feelings?

In short, many people do consider them insulting. Although less in recent years.

They are also wrong in every possible meaning. Politically, former Soviet bloc included East Germany (Berlin Tierpark, Leipzig zoo) but not current Croatia, Slovenia, Serb republic etc. East Germany was pretty fiercely loyal to USSR. Geographically, Czech republic and Croatia are more to the West than most of Austria with Vienna zoo, Sweden and Greece. Culturally, there is nothing especialy in common between eg. Baltic countries and Balkans.

Except for one thing -- the fact that I don't know a lot about the zoos of either region!! Same with Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Belurus, & Russia. Can anyone tell me what are that top zoos in these countries, and how do they compare with the top zoos in Germany, UK, and Netherlands?

If anyone can help me, I'm putting together a database with statistics of some of the world's top zoos. Essentially, I need the annual attendance figure for Bulgaria's Sofia Zoological Gardens.

does anyone know anything about sofia zoo? i saw some footage on you tube of a tiger that was supposedly from sofia zoo that had no front paws and was walking on its stumps. it was in a filthy cage with rusty bars and a wet floor. (i dont know what the date of the footage)

the only other thing i know about the zoo is that a group of wild dogs broke into the zoo in febuary and killed 15 animals, mostly deer.
