2008 was the year of the amphibian in European zoos, which saw a lot of collections building new faciliites for amphibians and bringing in new species to their collections.
Now 2009 will be the year of the European carnivore, focusing on the "not so dirt dozen", which are,
polar bear
European wolves (6 subspecies)
European lynx (5-11 subspecies recognised)
marbled polecat
European otter
Iberian lynx
brown bear
Arctic fox
jackal
European mink
European wildcat
wolverine
As with the amphibians it will be interesting which collections will take in any of the above mentioned species as part of the project.
Here is a link to the website with all the projects which will be funded by the events held all over Europe during the year.
