To Celebrate the 100 year anniversary Edinburgh Zoo are celebrating throughout the year with special events. Some of the highlights are

Centenary exhibition - there will be an exhibition at the Central Library from 1 April to 31 May

Centenary screenings - A number of documentaries and footage will be shown in the Budongo Lecture Theatre every Tuesday.

Centenary Lectures - Alongside the talks by keepers, we will have a number of special guest lecturers visiting the zoo with a theme of looking at the role of zoos in the 21st century.

Animal Birthdays - We've picked out a different animal birthday every month to mark throughout the year

Edinburgh Zoo Nights - New for the centenary, we will be launching an exciting after hours, adult only event, with entertainment, music, silent disco, food and drink, animal talks and encounters, a street market and more (not sure if this will be a members only event)

100 Years, 100 Prizes - 22 July is the official Centenary day (100 years since the zoo opened its doors), so we’re going to celebrate by giving away 100 prizes throughout the day ranging from keeper experiences gifts to food and drink.

These are only a few events that will be taking place throughout the year.

The Zoo is also hosting the ABWAK Symposium (which I will be attending) as well as the EAZA conference.

I am more than happy to meet up with any Zoochatters who are visiting this year. If there was enough interest then I would be happy to host a Zoochatters get together.

2013 is a bumper year for UK anniversaries with Twycross, Colchester and Welsh Mountain all celebrating 50 years in the zoo game.

Do you know if Edinburgh are planning an anniversary publication? Continental zoos rarely miss an opportunity to publish a celebratory book(let) but we do rather poorly by comparison.

I think there was talk of updating the book 'Wonders Never Cease' which was published in 2006. If that doesn't happen I'm hoping that they release a guidebook for the anniversary.

I try to visit every few months, so I shall definitely bear this in mind - especially as my next visit is actually a bit overdue :p

At one time Edinburgh Zoo had ambitious plans to bring back several of the megafauna species that they once had (giraffes, elephants, gorillas, etc.). Are these plans likely to happen sometime in the coming century of the zoo, or have they pretty much died?

The Zoo needs to sort out its infrastructure before bringing back any of the megafauna. I do miss the prescence of them but the Zoo has lots of other interesting species. We will just need to wait and see what the new CEO has in store for the Zoo.

I will be at Edinburgh Zoo on Friday, April 19, if anyone is interested in meeting your American cousin. (And extra bonus points if any non-American can tell us what infamous event in U.S. history is tied to the phrase "Our American Cousin").
