Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2011 #1

First time I've seen the Gelada enclosure. It looks far better than Colchester's as here they basically have a large field. It doesn't look like there is much Rockwork though- just in one small area?

It is certainly a very successful group.

It's a very simple enclosure but effective. However it is true that there aren't many rocks at all, I think a few more rocky areas would add some interest and variety.

Nearly all the Gelada enclosures I've seen(photos of) in europe have big piles of rocks, while some have grassy areas too.

I think the large extent of grass here is good as this is forms their staple diet and smaller enclosures quickly become bare. However a couple of decent sized piles of natural;) rocks would break up the enclosure a bit more and give them some 'cliff faces' for security etc.

Just visited at the weekend (after a long period of non visits!)
Couple of observations:
Panda enclosure now a full on building site - and teh baboons have moved. It took a while for me to work it out (ask someone!!) but they have temporarily been moved to the lion house(!) where there is work being done to the small pen (a roof) and I was told that the baboons have most of the off show area.

Still a lot of damage noticeable presumably from the snow fall. (net roofs not been fixed, any ideas why the delay?)

Only one tiger... I guess the female has left, tibor was still there, now in the females old enclosure. Anyone know when the new female is due to arrive!?

Also, RE sea lion pool. Surely with a still growing male sea lion, what appears to be an outdated filtration system (the water looks disgusting) it is only fair that the sea lions move on. The pool is very small, especially for such a large species. This space, along with the unused area behind the pool surely with a bit of imagination has enormous potential for a new species. Maybe sea lions would return in the future?

as far as I am lead to believe, the work being done on the outdoor enclosure at the Lion house where the baboons are temporarily being held will also be 'lion proof' with platforms which will suit the baboons for now, and for the lions when they have the house back for themselves

with regards the delay to fixing the enclosures affected by the snow is down to the usual 'effectiveness' of Insurance companies! once the insurance pays out for each area affected they can start work on repairs

the female tiger Chandra left within the last two weeks and work is currently underway to make some improvements before the arrival of Tibor's new mate

on another note, there is also a new female jaguar due to arrive this year, hopefully having a better chance with Mowgli than poor Tina (RIP).......

expect movements for Leishan the hippo youngster and the young tapir over the next few months

great to see the Aardwolves have settled in so quickly, and great to see the polecats back in the collection aswell :o)

seen the wallaby joey popping its head out the other day....and the sousliks back out exploring...

Great news about the polecats, are they back in their old enclosure next to the aardwolves? and more importantly, did you actually see them?

Oh, I do hope this news is true! I already planned to pop up in a week or two, but this would be the icing on the cake :)

Thanks for the update Glasgowanimal:)I did not know about Tina no news on the Zoos facebook do you know where the female Jaguar is to come from?

If the baboons have moved, where are the lions? Or are they rotating the use of the enclosure?

From an earlier post it sounds as though they have done some baboon proofing in the enclosure, don't know what mind

Ahhh that would make sense cause there is a roof on that part..however it is kinda small for them?

I went yesterday; the lions were inside but I couldn't see any baboons in the outside enclosure. It is very large, but given the size of the group and how active these animals are, I would have imagined that I would have seen some.

I went yesterday and saw one there, but the icing on the cake was the great view of the Aardwolves which saw me getting my very first photos of this species! :)

the lions still have access to two of the indoor enclosures (including the glass viewing window)....the baboons are on the other side of the house...

at the zoo today, the roof is now on the outdoor section with platforms currently being added....hopefully this will be finished by the end of the week and the baboons will get access

the polecats are back in the small carnivore house beside the Sun Bears...did not see them today but have seen them a few times...

recent births are a Gelada Baboon and the Purple Faced Langur....

not sure where the female jaguar is coming from but I believe she is still quite young...

a bit of work going on in the enclosure that has been holding the captured beavers recently....near the geladas...a smaller pool has been constructed with a floor of sand around the enclosure and planted up....

a good sign is that the roof in the African Aviary has been fixed and animals allowed back out in the enclosure.....the Binturongs have also now been moved back in their enclosure following the roof being fixed....just the Duck Ponds roof still to be fixed
