Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2011 #2

The Egyptian vultures are now where the ravens were, the enclosure that was built specifically for egyptian vultures some time ago, next to the old camel house. The ravens are where the great grey owls were.

One of the female drill monkeys has given birth. They can be seen in the monkey house.

Excellent news! First birth to this trio and first in the UK(in the last 40 years) outside of Port Lympne. Presumably they don't know the baby's sex yet?

The entrance foyer to the Brilliant birds exhibit is in the process of being transformed into an exhibit area for amphibians and inverts.

Nicely choice snail line-up, but surely they can find something more interesting than White's Tree Frog!

Are the Ravens still going to HWP, or has that changed now the Great Grey Owl is going there (to be joined by it's new mate)?

I suspect they are displaying species they already hold, but have been off show since the Reptile/Amphibian house was demolished for Budungo.

It's good to see this, as Edinburgh has been very mammal/bird focussed for many years.

The ravens are designated to go in to the former otter enclosure at HWP, whilst the great grey owls are to be housed in a new aviary, down by the beavers.

I was lucky enough to see one of the marbled polecats when it first ventured out of its carry box about ten days ago.

I have not managed to visit for some time... Is the new exhibits at brilliant birds open now? Might try and go on Saturday if they are!
Also, with form what i read in the press, Pandas due by the end of the year, does anyone know what the next major project will be?
Edinburgh in the past always seems to have some sort of major move planned to follow on, though pandas will be hard to beat!! :D

Brilliant Birds is open, although ten days ago access was only available from the entrance opposite the picnic area. I really like Edinburgh, but anyone familiar with the Tropical House at Chester will find Brilliant Birds rather underwhelming (the species and their number are limited and the space rather sparse).

Fingers crossed for the pandas. Ridiculous as it may seem, the Chinese government have taken against nations who are anti-Gaddafi and western zoos are already suffering from withdrawn promises.

Whilst the work is going on in the main entrance to Brilliant Birds the usual "exit" door is doubling up as the entrance as awell. It is hoped that the plants in Brilliant Birds will do much better without the lorikeets and should fill out a bit. The female Chinese Cochin red jungle fowl is sitting on another clutch of eggs!

Heavens.:( Fingers crossed indeed- can't imagine how they'd feel after revamping the enclosures etc .

I saw from the Edinburgh zoo facebook, Simon's pic of a white faced saki in a walk through exhibit, where would this be?

Also, the map on the zoo's website is shamefully 14 months out of date.

They are now housed it what was the lemur walkthrough on the right just after the flamingos.

Myself and Helly have just got back from a very enjoyable day at Edinburgh :D the highlight for us was the fact that throughout the day - but especially after 4pm onwards - the marbled polecats were highly active and we managed to get plentiful photographs of these elusive little fellows! Photos of these and other species will follow soon.

Whilst stood at the marbled polecat enclosure, we made another sighting of an elusive species - a GentleLemur! Was good finally meeting a fellow ZooChatter. Needless to say, his photos of the polecats and aardwolves will put those I took today to shame, lol.

In other news, we are pretty sure one of the pygymy marmosets is pregnant. Spotted a few other likely pregnancies in some promising species, but I wouldn't like to a) jinx them b) get people's hopes up.

Also, Dillan the armadillo decided to be friendly at the Animal Antics and hopped onto Helly's shoe ;)
