If it's not busy you'll be able to go back to the entrance area and get extra Panda tickets for later in the day (when there's fewer people in the groups being shown around the exhibit). I never booked Panda tickets in advance and had full choice of visiting times when I reciprocally entered on two days last week (both weekdays though).

Get the "Safari Bus/Train" to the top of the hill and work your way downhill rather than hiking up -the zoos quite steep in areas and this will save you a little energy.

View "Big Cats/Carnivore Row" later in the day as they tend to be more active then.

Don't miss the unlabelled Cock-of-the-Rock in the Beautiful Birds exhibit.

Check out the little alley to the side of the Golden Cat exhibit (next to the Aardwolf & Mongoose) as the Golden Cat might be viewable (we saw it there, though through bushes).

Don't miss the Marbled Polecats (though chances of seeing them small) -concrete building between SkyWalk thing and Beautiful Birds.

There is an adorable baby Pygmy Hippo there at the moment.

Finally, don't miss the Guinea Baboons in the (old) separation part of the Lion House.

From memory from years ago(it used to be the old Ape House;) ) it is only a short walk from the Entrance, a few minutes at most as both are at the lower end of the Zoo.

KarenZoo- hope you enjoy your visit. Apart from Koalas and other exciting species for you, look out for the Hamlyn's Owl-faced Monkeys- now the only ones in the UK- probably in the Monkey House.

If you can notice/ascertain the sex of the young zooborn Drill(in the Monkey House) that would be useful too.:)

I believe Edinburgh have (1.1) Margay off-show. I hope (Could they?) use the enclosure for them?
 
I heard the Margay where going on show in old Bintourong enclosure enclosure looks finished with new ropes and logs but no sign of them yet !!!!
 
any idea whats going in the old wolf enclosure it was supposed to be chinese goral but they are down in the front of the zoo where the stanleys cranes are???

This tallies with what I was told some months ago, as you'll note in my quoted message from earlier in this thread - however you'll also note that other people have been told differently more recently, so it's still very much a "wait and see" game!

Haven't the foggiest where they are held offshow, no. I've been told a number of sometimes contradictory things about when they would go onshow; initially the plan was to have had them onshow by now, in the old binturong enclosure on Carnivore Row - this is why the entry for margays was re-added to the stocklist on the zoo's website. However, when it became necessary for a new binturong male to arrive at the collection, and thus be kept in the old binturong enclosure whilst awaiting the departure of the old male, I'm given to understand these plans were put on hold.

However, if the margays are intended to be onshow in one of the small carnivore dens near the sunbears, this shouldn't have been a factor. There are three enclosures in this block which could in theory hold the margays - one holds a Tibetan Golden Cat, one the Aardwolves, and one the Dwarf Mongeese.

So to summarise, the above is a lot of information but nothing solid to answer your question ;) time will tell, really. Margays are a nice species, so they should be worth the wait.

just assumed as was informed via one of the education officers that he wasnt happy as they werent out in this space
 
They're a great species, so the wait for whenever - and wherever - they do go onshow will be worth it!
 
Just got back from the carnivore and giant pandas talk....there was alot to tell and i will write it all down tomorrow when i get the chance for a longer post... but the biggest highlight for me is that they are going to get clouded leopards... this is fantastic news for me as i was going to travel down from scotland to the south of england specifically to see this species so for them to be coming to edinburgh zoo would be amazing.

Just had to give that wee bit news...write a longer post later... just exceedingly excited!!!!! :D

Great news, my favourite collection got even better! But just a warning, a collection having clouded leopards doesn't mean you will actually SEE them!!

This was mentioned to me - in confidence - some weeks ago, and it is indeed great news. Such a beautiful cat and an excellent addition, the only downside being the relocation of the Amur leopards to HWP.

I know, but it just makes the move more imminent. Mind you, they've got to build something for them at HWP first, which was supposed to be in the area where that water shooting gallery game is.

What you've also got to remember is that the Amur leopard enclosure at Edinburgh is possibly the worst enclosure in the zoo for the species it holds - I'm sure HWP will [at some point] build something much better for them and be able to take away a bit of a mark on the zoo.

Possibly you're right, sadly i haven't been for 3 years, but my memory of the worst enclosure for the species was the Drill, by far, it was a 60s enclosure, leopards lived in much worse than the Edinburgh enclosure at some major zoos into the 90s!
By 60s, i mean typical of those you would have seen then, not built then, i.e most were being replaced by the 70s.

Excellent move! It does make the transfer of Amur leopard more palatable. All thanks to a certain well versed zoo professional. :)
 
lesley444 i have prayed for these clouded leopards for so long spoke to carnivore keeper a while back and she was talking about them then oooh thank the lord
