Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #3

great day at ed yesterday. Giant pandas were great, indoor exhibits pretty uninspiring but the outdoor exhibits and theming were a lot better.
Swamp wallbies seem to have taken over the zoo, with at least 2 enclosures being occupied by them throughout the zoo. New phillipine house is looking well with pair of active binturong, taiwan beauty snake, pair of warty pigs, single banteng. Also saw at least 2 spotted dear in the old goral enclosure - goral now down where swamp wallabies and white-naped crane where. Sealion pool has been drained and saw 5 great white pelicans in the old wetlands avairy at the bottom of zoo. Brilliant birds was full of life - cock of the rock was class! but disappointed with magic forest - it seemed empty with just pygmy slow loris, douroucouli (2 enclosures) and goeldis (2 enclosures) - where are the cuscus, luzon cloud rats, titi etc!? Monkey house a bit sparse though although good to see babies in the barbary macaques, drill and diana monkeys. I think there might have been a howler monkey baby as well. Shame to have moved the purple-faced langurs on. At least one amur leopard still there, no sign of clouded. Tigers have been mixed. Still find it hard to think of a zoo with a better mammal collection than ed!

I agree IMO I think Edinburgh's is the best Mammal collection in the UK. I am unsure as to where the Banteng came from, does anybody know where from? West Midlands did have a male but he seems to have disappeared from there unless he has died which I think is the case.

Any more on the new Philippine House?
(looks interesting to say the least)

It's not a new house per se, more a new theme for an existing area - this bit of the zoo used to hold red river hogs, diana monkeys, bongo and moholi galagos.

Where has the cuscus gone in Magic Forest then, it was in the last enclosure in August, has it been moved off show?

Interesting there seems to be a move towards a more South East Asian theme in the zoo recently, the African species that used to be in that house have all left the collection (or are a much reduced holding in the case of Diana Monkeys).

Not sure where the Cuscus has gone, they were never out their sleeping box any time we were there!

The webpage is gone but a search finds this- note the 'old_animals address

http://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/animals/old_animals/GroundCuscus.html

Must be one of the shortest animal stays ever!

According to the Panda talk-giver last week, they have outside access in the evenings. I forgot to ask about weekends.

I never managed to see the cuscus either and I really wanted to (saw cuscus in the wild a long time ago and have never seen them since), shame they are gone already!

Poor pandas I wouldn't want to be stuck in those indoor enclosures, they look a bit dull, but its better than them getting stressed at least.

Great to hear that the diana monkeys have bred , must be the first birth in quite a few years . How many are in the group ?

I assume the drill you saw was the one born last year , or has there been a second birth ?

Shame about the purple-faced langurs . Wonder what happened to the Edinburgh ones and most of those previously at Cotswold WP .

that's pretty cool. Which wild species did you see and where?

When I was in Flores I met a birder who had recently been to Obi and seen the Obi cuscus. I was a little jealous!

Don't know about the Edinburgh Langurs but from another thread some of the ones at Cotswold were sent to South Africa. Not sure if they still have the (ex Twycross) breeding pair + young, or the two previous males that were kept together, or none of them.

Edinburgh Drills- it appears the 2nd female has yet to breed.

Edinburgh Dianas- someone said they had as many as twelve now, so there may have been more recent babies. Without ISIS it is difficult to check.:(

On my last visit in late July, there appeared to be two or three infants.

I'm relying on Edinburgh rather to carry on being the main producer of Dianas in the UK. Hope they go on keeping a decent-sized group(s).

Do you know how many seperate groups or breeding pairs they have?

I know Pertinax is always very interested so lets talk Diana Guenons a moment.

I really don't think Edinburgh have anywhere near 12 Diana Guneons.
There were NO Diana Guenons born in 2011 anywhere in Europe.

The following is true as of a few months ago:
Exmoor have a 1.1 mother son pair.
Paignton have a female and 2 of her offspring.
Newquay have 0.2 which have been on their surplus list for a very long time. Prior to this they recieved a male from Port Lympne who was killed by the females.
