Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2013

They certainly were not there last month; great news if they have indeed arrived though.

I heard that fresh imports from the US/SSP have entered into Europe proper. A really attractive new species for our region as a whole. Nice to see Edinburgh go into them too.

New wallabies are not there yet (at least not on show anyway). Just looked at them-they are pretty funky looking wallabies.

Dave-ex-wolverine enclosures are indeed empty with signs inside saying there are no animals in them. I look forward to seeing what they do with them now, even if it's just give existing cats more space. Hopefully it won't be too long a wait-it does feel like the zoo is slowly filling up again with less noticeable empty enclosures. Just a shame the sea lion pool is empty again with it being the first enclosure most people see. Not sure what realistically would be good in there if they don't have the money to sort out the filtration- any ideas anyone?

On the zoo map on the website it lists yellow-footed rock wallaby near koala! Do the zoo keep this species? If so I missed any news on their arrival! :)

A very attractive addition to the collection, when they arrive.
Other observations from the new map are that goral are back in the collection and the Bawean deer have been moved into the former wolf wood.
The 2 top paddocks, right at the summit have been labelled development area, this bodes well.

This is what I'm hoping for-I really want to see them.

Did the goral ever leave completely? There has always been at least 1 around on all my visits. The map is out of date already in some ways-e.g. the pelicans moved back to the duck ponds.

As far as I can remember duck ponds has the pelicans, ibis, stork & Madagascar teal-there may be others I've forgotten though as I went through that bit quite quickly on Sunday-anyone care to add to the list... Looked like several Ibis were nesting. The smaller aviary opposite the duck pond had a stork and an African crane.

Koala exhibit refurb is also fully underway with that whole area of the zoo blocked off just now (so can't see the koalas). The Victoria crowned pigeons are in brilliant birds, not sure about the other birds. Can anyone remember when it is due to be completed?

When we were there last week, they were seeding the top paddocks.

Glad to see something going into the old Wolf/Maned Wolf enclosure, as the top of the zoo was beginning to look quite empty, with only the anteaters there.

I wonder why the Pelicans have been moved back out the old Sealion pool, is that a permanent thing?

Hello, I'm going to be visiting Edinburgh Zoo this summer and I have a few questions. If kind people could answer these, that would be great! :D

1. Does anyone know when the koalas will be on show again? The website says "early summer", but isn't it early summer right now? I'll be visiting during the weekend of the 21st of June, how likely is it that the enclosure will be finished by then?

2. Is there a recommended time for viewing the pandas? This is going to be a highlight of the trip, it would be great if they were awake!

3. Does anyone have any other specific recommendations? I already have a few singled out, such as the binturong and the Malayan tapir, but a few more couldn't hurt. :p

Thank you so much!

The Tibetan Golden Cats, without a shadow of a doubt, are the one must-see species at the zoo :) the gibbons are also well worth a look, as barring Monkey World way down in Dorset, they are the only individuals of the species in the UK.

Worth a shot looking for the Clouded Leopard too, you might strike lucky where none of us have!

Don't have a recommended time for viewing Pandas but they'll generally be less crowds later in the day (I presume you're aware of the over the top timeslot booking system).

I'd recommemd getting the land train to the top of the hill and walking down -it's a big zoo with lots to see and it's best to save energy wherever you can.

Cats, like at most places, are more showy towards the end of the day.

Penguins are a highlight too -improved (viewing) enclosure, big pool, porpoising penguins and probably more Gentoos than any other zoo in the world.

Thanks, guys! I'll definitely check out all these animals. The penguins were the only ones I already knew about (you can tell how proud they are of their penguins just from their logo!).

Yes, that's why I was anxious to choose a good time: if you only get 20 minutes at a certain time of day, you'd better choose wisely!

As it turns out, we're going to have to get our panda tickets at the gate because we're getting in on our Dublin Zoo membership, so we might not get much of a choice of time after all.

They've now put two Kiang on show in the paddock above the Egyptian Vulture aviary. This is good as, apart from being a nice species, there are noticeable amounts of empty cages, paddocks and aviaries at the moment and any reduction in this is to be welcomed.

Means the species is a bit easier to see than it was when there was just HWP holding them.
