They always let them breed, it was just what happened to the litter....

As for keeping them again, see also meerkats and ring tailed lemurs! (Although there is still the rumour that those at Edinburgh are only there on loan)

To end with, it is definitely that time of year when new arrivals start to put in an appearance. Too many to mention, I am sure I will miss some off, but in recent weeks we have seen gentoo chicks (and many more eggs still to hatch), Darwin’s rhea chicks, pudu fawns, cassowary eggs and a kudu calf born at Edinburgh Zoo
 
Drills are up to 2.3. I suspect both births(female then male) are to one female and none from the other, but I could be wrong there.

Diana Monkeys are down to just a single pair.:(

But Gelada group is large and good sex ratio.:)

The fact that the data is 5 months out of date is always makes things a little uncertain, but:

(a) Have the two neo-natal chimp deaths previously been reported?
(b) Have all the Guinea Baboons left the zoo since the census?
(c) 15 short clawed otters - is this the one family, or do they have a second group offshow?

(d) Does anyone know where the ravens went to? they were supposed to be going to the HWP, but that didn't happen.

a. I believe so- certainly one was.
b. I believe so- some to Yorkshire WP and the rest back to the re-opened Paris Zoo from where they came.

But they did swap males with another collection ( I wonder who )during the year to give them an unrelated pair .

yes, I did notice that. It may have been with somewhere in Europe? Dianas in the UK are in a pretty poor state generally, currently non-breeders at Exmoor, Newquay, Paignton, Twycross(if all of these still actually have them)+ a small 'group'(trio?) at ZSL- I can't think where else. Only Port Lympne/Howletts seems to have breeding pairs and might be the most likely for an exchange with Edinburgh if it was within UK.

A shame. Edinburgh is one of the few zoos that's bothered to give these lovely animals a tall enclosure.

When Edingburgh got drills, they recieved 2 males and one female from Barcelona. Later, they got two more females from the US, one of which has now bred twice. It seems 2 of the animals originally from Barcelona (1.1) left - does anyone know where they are? Great news that one of the drill babys is female, the population is heavily biased towards males!

They did indeed and they did say where they went at the time. I think it was to somewhere in Scandinavia.
The two females currently at Edinburgh are sisters that came from Columbus. Evidently they weren't compatible with the original handreared Barcelona female, so one pair were sent away.

Yet Port Lympne's group has produced nearly all females for some time. The latest baby there may have stopped that run(and it also has a different father to the others).
 
I believe the male Diana monkey currently at Edinburgh came from Paignton, where they now have a new male from Europe together with 2 females. An important breeding group, especially considering how many are in the UK at the moment.

Ah hah.. thanks for that. It would fit as Paignton's group consisted of mother, daughter and son (since their breeding male was sent to Europe). If the son has now moved to Edinburgh its made space for a new male at Paignton to form a new trio with the mother/daughter there.
