Avian Influenza Update:

While restrictions are still in place, the guidance has been amended from 1 March 2017 and in line with this we are planning the following:

Penguins Rock will re-open and there will be disinfectant foot mats in place for visitors

Penguin Parade will remain suspended until all restrictions are lifted

Brilliant Birds will remain closed until all restrictions are lifted. The front hall exhibiting fish, leaf-cutter ants and amphibians will remain open.

Pelican walkthrough will re-open with disinfectant foot mats in place at entry/exit gates.
 
I take it with the re-introduction of the red pandas, the collection no longer has Tree Porcupines?

I am happy the current zoo director (perhaps a bit lost in news spaces that Dr. Valentine is back at the helm, but well ... certainly good news too) gave a concise and insightful look into all the work they actually do as part of the giant panda conservation program (and how that USD10.million is being spent) and that a good part of it is that the current mountain habitats may be sub optimal for giant pandas ...!

As noted from a recent visit to Schoenbrunn im Austria, ... even there there giant panda interpretation boards still highlight the major issues in natural panda breeding in zoos and captive breeding centers in P.R. China. I would hope - as both this institution and San Diego seem to be the only institutions experiencing natural breeding and birthing -.
 
Gaiazoo, NL, will receive 14 barbary macaque from Edinburgh this year, is this the whole group from there?
 
I think it will be the whole group, I doubt Edinburgh will keep only a few individuals. If this is the case it means an enclosure that was renovated specifically to hold the Macaques only last year will be available for another species. Does anyone know what Edinburgh plan to do with the enclosure?
 
@TLD, with Iain at the helm I am a little more confident that they may refurb the enclosure for a more attractive and at least threatened primate species. Let us be pleasantly surprised for once.

They were planning on moving the yellow-breasted capuchins into Living Links but that species could attack the smaller monkeys. The keepers are wanting the monkey house to close or be upgraded, but because the money bags (pandas) are next-door, they can't do anything, even hammering. The best we can hope for is maybe the inside being gutted and renovated.
 
Baku is the 6th calf to come from mum Sayang. She had two boys, Vasan and Kamal and two girls called Indah and Nadira to previous male Ka. With new male Mogli she has had another two boys, Mekong and then Baku.
