Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2020

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo has launched a new live webcam to thank everyone who has donated to help feed its animals in April.

Giving viewers the chance to visit the wildlife conservation charity’s eight month old Asiatic lion cubs from home, lion cam will also help to raise awareness of the threats faced by this endangered species in the wild:

Rockhopper chicks and webcam update

The first few weeks and months are critical for newborns and sadly only three of our five rockhopper penguin chicks have made it through this sensitive stage.

To give our remaining chicks the best possible chance of survival, our penguin keepers are now hand-rearing them which is why you can only see adult rockhopper penguins on the webcam and they'll be spending more and more time away from the nests.

We'll be sure to keep you up to date with how the chicks are getting on.

Thank you for your support ❤️

They're where the Visayan Warty Pigs used to be right? I didn't see them when I went in February but I thought that enclosure was empty so I might just not have been looking/been distracted by the vulture

Yeah the former Visayan Warty Pig enclosure, I'm the same, was there in Feb and didn't see them, enclosure was unsigned though so I probably didn't look!

I made my first post lockdown visit on Monday 13th July, a few points to note:

  • All Covid-19 measures in place were very well signed and observed throughout my visit. Social distancing was relatively easy in almost all parts of the zoo and all visitors seemed to be very respectful of the new requirements.
  • Queues were experienced on arrival, and also at the Panda's and Lion's (keepers were present at both these enclosures limiting the amount of people who had access at the one time as both of these areas are dead ends)
  • Keeper advised the Giraffes are now expected to arrive in Easter 2021, they had arranged for 3 animals (1.2) to arrive this year but with building work delayed due to Covid-19, these animals have since been moved to other collections.
  • Signs up advising they are expecting a new young breeding pair of Asian Short Clawed Otters, they will be going into the same enclosure as the previous ASCO's.
  • There was one Red Panda in one of the enclosures in the small carnivore house (between the Sun Bear's and Magic Forest), I'm assuming this is the offspring from the breeding pair.
  • The Crowned Lemurs are now in the former Binturong enclosure, the Binturongs are still in one of the enclosures in the small carnivore house.
