  • Enclosure behind the Sun Bear's is being turned into a water feature, pics below:

Yet another former enclosure being quietly repurposed to hide the ever-shrinking number of actual exhibits..... although I'll give them some credit, a water feature will be nicer than the purpose it was being put to when last I visited - to wit, they had a bunch of lawn flamingos and other such animal models strewn around within :p

Do you happen to know the former *living* inhabitants of this exhibit?

I believe the rock hyraxes moved to the quarantine building (which is behind the tapirs/macaws) when the first latern nights event happened. They have since moved to a new collection but I know not where.

Anyone know what has happened to the margay? The enclosure (the one by the staff building and used to house a pheasant species) has completely gone when I visited on Saturday the 17th.

They got rid of the last one a few weeks ago, sad to say - just the latest in a long line of oddities quietly disposed of, and enclosures entirely removed from existence.

Are there still Siberian musk deer, and if so, are they easy to see and photograph?

Not entirely sure if the single animal they have latterly held (mixed with Visayan Spotted Deer) is still present - it's quite hard to spot.

Last I heard, they still had a single male and were hoping to add a female but I doubt that will happen. According to his keepers, he is very active and aggressive but I haven't seen in since 2018

1st visit of the year today, thoroughly enjoyed being back at the zoo again! Glorious sunshine all day, managed to see the vast majority of the animals, and pretty much all visitors following social distancing and the one way system, fantastic 1st day back!

A few small updates:

  • Visayan Warty Pigs have moved back to their previous enclosure opposite the Egyptian Vultures
  • At least 2 Brown Capuchin young in Living Links
  • Lowland Nyala have been moved to the enclosure between the Zebra's and Tiger's (female Tiger was very interested in them!), although only seen the females, not sure if the male is in their too or if he is elsewhere

Could they not have said window dressing exercise?

That’s disappointing considering what beautiful animals they are and under threat as all wild cats seem to be.

A few updates from my visit this afternoon:

  • The enclosure between the chimps and brilliant birds (most recently holding Meerkats) has been demolished.
  • The enclosure between the Scottish Wildcats and the Gelada's (most recently holding Baer's Pochard) is now empty. I'm not sure if the Baer's Pochard have moved to another enclosure, I didn't see them anywhere, although I didn't visit the duck ponds which would be the most obvious place to move them to.
  • Magic Forest, Budongo Trail and both Rhino houses have now re-opened due to the Covid Restrictions being relaxed. Wee Beasties is still closed as it's too small to maintain social distance.
  • The toilet block in the car park is currently getting an animal mural spray painted onto it.

Hey guys. I have a couple of questions about Edinburgh zoo and I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out.
. When are the giraffes expected to arrive?
. What is the zoos reptile collection like?
. How active and viewable are the large carnivores?
I've been wanting to visit Edinburgh for a few years now and when I found out they were getting giraffes it became a must visit zoo for me. I know that they have a few less common species in UK zoos (giant pandas, king penguins, koalas and Malayan tapirs) these are the main reason I want to visit but I live in the Midlands so I'm just wondering if it is worth the long journey or not?
