Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2021

More Meerkats? As you've probably noticed I'm still bitter towards Edinburgh having so many Meerkats AND replacing the Sea Lions with them. I guess I'm just a bit sick of seeing them in every zoo I ever visit. Oh well

There is currently only one Meerkat enclosure at Edinburgh, the one right at the main entrance. The update advised it will be a "Meerkat experience area" so I would assume it will be some sort of interactive space where visitors will be able to get close to the Meerkats, possibly feeding them or something along those lines, as opposed to just another Meerkat enclosure.

Ok thanks for telling me! I haven't visited for quite a few years now due to their decreasing animal collection and when I last visited there were at least a couple of Meerkat exhibits but the new experience does sounds quite interesting.

Development update from Edinburgh:

"While most of the zoo is now open to visitors, our Wee Beasties building must remain closed until social distancing restricted are relaxed and our primate walkthroughs are closed because our lemurs and saki monkeys have an increased risk from Covid-19.

Other areas may also be closed temporarily while we carry out some exciting new changes – Brilliant Birds will soon be home to a fantastic new mystery species (all will be revealed soon…) and most of our lorikeets have moved out to make way for a new meerkat experience area later this year."

I believe the "new mystery species" will be the pair of Linné's two-toed sloth that have been off show for quite some time now.

Great news! What are they going to put in the current meerkat enclosure then?

I figured Brilliant Birds was either closing or removing most of their birds. The crowned-pigeon left for Manchester Zoo afew weeks ago and if they have removed their lorikeets, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the birds go too. Also Edinburgh no longer has a dedicated bird department, it was combined with Primates earlier in the year.

Not only was it pretty new, but it was more-or-less a like-for-like replacement for an exhibit they had got rid of only a few years previously citing the cost of keeping the lorikeets fed :p so I strongly suspect this is another panda-adjacent cost-cutting move! Said exhibit was of course the one on the current site of Brilliant Birds.

I remember the Rainbow Landings exhibit they had in Brilliant Birds that was good. I'm just a bit disappointed in the direction the zoo has gone down over the years. It's been what? 10 years or more since they got the Pandas and I still haven't seen them. Every time I visited they're either 'unavailable for viewing' or some other excuse. I'd probably stand a better chance somewhere in Europe to see them.

I sound a bit like a broken record when I come here to berate Edinburgh Zoo

with out a doubt panda cost related. When these inept creatures curl up their toes, move on or return to China, I suspect the zoo will slowly start to diversify itself again. Not been for years myself since the panda arrivals.
