Dharma and Lucu at Edinburgh are still being rotated I believe. I wonder why there seems to have been a delay in introductionsThanks! I meant at Edinburgh, it's a lot closer for me so was hoping they'd finally been introduced.

At least 0.0.3 Asian Short Clawed Otter pups have been born and are now venturing outside.
I know that maybe the lion enclosure may be slightly out of date, but I really hope they don’t phase them out because they’re one of my favourite animals at the zoo, and they could at least refurbish their enclosure. From what I've heard, Edinburgh are quietly phasing out lions from their collection, or at least the current Asian lions. The price's dominant male is set to be vasectomised, the other two males castrated, and the females moved to other zoos. I agree that their lion enclosure isn't the best, and would be better suited to another species, but I hope they don't ditch lions entirely.
I don't understand that management seems so hopelessly out of touch with reality. Lions are crowd pullers, the zoo animal collection has been neglected and loads of empty enclosures. Dilapidation breeds neglect creates stagnation and eventually demise of a zoo. From what I've heard, Edinburgh are quietly phasing out lions from their collection, or at least the current Asian lions. Panda’s going soon as well. Not looking good, is it?I don't understand that management seems so hopelessly out of touch with reality. Does anyone know when this is happening? Was planning a trip in the summer to see them. Will they still be there?Panda’s going soon as well. Not looking good, is it?

Brilliant, thank you. I don't have to disappoint my children just yet then. Will have to save it for whilst we are there and the inevitable no show. The Panda's will now return to China at the end of 2023.
Giant panda stay at Edinburgh Zoo extended for two years | Edinburgh Zoo
I think it’s worth remembering that the current lions still have a good few years in them, so the zoo could be a completely different place by the time they have no lions.
That may be, but .. it is the notion of vasectomy for the males AND breaking up the pride AND sending off the females elsewhere that makes for a unenticing unappealing concept and sight. You will get to see a dysfunctional pride for yonker years and after that they just simply and quietly disappear (just like a good part of the Edinburgh Zoo collection already is gone leaving just empty derilict enclosures with not any new inhabitants nor future planned). It lacks visitor appeal (and if and when it would become more widely known how Asiatic lions are currently being managed in the UK ... see Bristol, Chester, Paignton most definitely not good PR!I think it’s worth remembering that the current lions still have a good few years in them, so the zoo could be a completely different place by the time they have no lions.

I see what you’re saying, but by sending the females off elsewhere, that might just improve the he state of asiatic lions in the UK depending on where they’re sent. The general public will still be happy because lion is lion to them, the structure of the pride (to them atleast) isn’t particularly important. The returning of the pandas will likely mean Edinburgh actually become better off money-wise, which they can then use to redevelop certain areas of the zoo, while the existing lions keep the guests entertained in the meantime. That may be, but .. it is the notion of vasectomy for the males AND breaking up the pride AND sending off the females elsewhere that makes for a unenticing unappealing concept and sight. I agree, I think Edinburgh has more pressing matters at hand than the lions so will likely leave them for a while until more important development takes place. Then, we should hopefully expect something in the way of lions, but I’m sure that’ll be a good few years into the future. I just hope that the plan to return the pandas to China will workout well for them.It might improve the state of Asiatic lions within UK zoos, I just do not believe that is the case as most seem to be going into single sex groups now. ZSL send off its females to PD in Belgium, Chester is in the process of doing so ... Not even sure what the plans for the Continent are with respect to Asiatic lion EEP going forward (I do believe more and healthier imported stock direct from India is required - as a source population of wildcaught lions is there). Further I am convinced it is about time we have an in situ component in Asiatic lion conservation beyond southern India and Gir Forest (allthough that is a slightly different ball game here).
The Great Giant Panda Debacle really IS the issue at Edinburgh I do believe the hanging on for dear life onto giant pandas that fail to reproduce at the zoo and have been for yonker years and management not taking stock and acknowledging their misjudgement beyond a 10-year timeframe. That would free up investment for improving the zoo, which at this moment in time is starved to move up rhino/tapir area or the central forefront of the zoo or even the old Primate House (a collection for which Edinburgh Zoo is / was famous for).

I think this is something to talk about on the Chester zoo news, not here.@Kifaru Bwana where are Chester moving their Asiatic Lions? I haven’t heard this news before

Wonder where the Cuscus are going ?Also found out a couple of things yesterday as I did the keeper experience at the zoo:
• The male meerkats that were in the small building next to park near budongo trail are now in the monkey house off- show in a better enclosure (they’re in the long parts)
• They also have cuscus off- show in the area which is keepers only next to the wee beesties. This part had the armadillos before but they moved into the sloth enclosure.
